THE "WILMINGTON POST. WILMINGTON. N. C, AUGUST 23, I860. Tiie following extract from our extra of August 12th wis intended for insertion in our, last issue,' but was" inadvertently omit ted. , We cheerfully insert it, now, as we liaycnd desitc to do injustice to the gentle man : - ' j ' . To the Public The conrluctor of this paper issues this extra in order to make cer tain qualifications regarding the regular is sue of UiePosT this morning. 1 Owing to tacts which havo come to his knowledge since the issue, he has been led r to regret certain articles and paragraphs ! which appeared, and wishes them to be con sidered aa retracted. Especially! does he jlcsire to withdraw the paragraph: concern ing 41 a Mr. Cowan," for he believes that it does great injustico to a most high mind- cd j and honorable gentleman. j TVc think.it due to the Senior Editor of the Post to state that he has gone (North to jrocuro a large stock of job material, and that were he here, ho would probably have i mxjTQ to say upon this subject. The writer of this article believes that the Post has no desire or intention to injure innocent par : ties.- ' " I v iuwasuip urcanwauons. thievish; and fimittmn an ' diluvium very Our township officers have been elected offensiveto Southern olfactories. The most important duty, of course, is the organization of schools. We urge the Boards to bo very cautious and at the same time energetic, in the performance of their duties. A careful study of the laws i3 earn estly solicited. Without this no good can be done, and our friends may get into trouble, i The duties of the Township Clerks are arduous and requires great care and study. Let them move slowly but surely, and await the arrival of the laws governing them, which will be in about a month. We hope to witness schools flour ishing all over the county this fall, that the poor may be enabled to give their children, what they were unable themselves to pro cure an education. SPECIAL. THE Hi THIS SECTION. Tlie 6 Post 55 . The Ecumenical Council. It is rumored, with what decree of truth it is impossible to say, states the New York 1erall, that ever since the calling of the v Ecumenical Council by Pope Pio lono quite a busy correspondence has been car rietl on with regard to it between the Arch . bishops and Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in this country! The object of this, it is said, was to come to some understand ing between themselves in ordjer to act, so lar . as was possible, in full (co-operation during the deliberations of the Council. One point upon which these rumors have it I that an agreement was arrived at is men tioned as bciDg the relation of the State and the Church, and that this agreement was to the effect that the rep resentati vies in the Council of their Church in tliis country will urge for general adoption the Amcricatn sys tem of complete severance of the Church from the State, restoring to it full liberty of motion uu trammeled by the political power of the country, and basing it upon the vol imtary adhesion of its followers, at the same time renouncing all active interference with the political administration ot government. Should these rumors be founded iij fact, the American prelates may exercise a healthy influence upon the future of the Catholic i world. A meeting of German Catholic Liberals j took place on July 25, at Gratz, under the presidency of Professor Davidosky. After an address frbm M. Uhlick,1' a speaker of high reputation, the assembly voted the fol lowing; motion : j Consulering-that the Ecumenical Council, . .which "is to nieet on December 8, has been imposed on. the Papal Government by the party of the Jesuits, bv which it is and will . lUiittiuu txk-lMi.exmtmllad, and considering that the resolutions likely to be passed by that assembly will thus be directed against intellectual. and moral progress, !this body accepts with extreme satisfaction the invita- tion addressed by the independent thinkers of Italy to those who share their opinions to take part in the meeting they convoke at Naples, the object of which is to encourage civilization and charity, and to counteract the intellectual and moral degradation of humanity which Jesuitism systematically seeks to produce. I The assembly, composed of 4,000 persons, then nominated M. Zimmerman, editor of i Die Frcyhcil. of Gratz, to represent it at - Naples. The Kaleigh Iliulutin. Sentinel comes out with a great blow over the Abbott-Engelhard cor respondence. That editor Is the last man in the world to talk about bravery, as his fear of assassination in the Court room in a Western county plainly shows. He is not out of the wood3 yet, and had better be very cautious how he conducts himself. The Abbott-Engelhard affair was settled amicably, honorably and we believe satisfac torily to both parties, and we refer to the gentlemen on both sides who signed the final correspondence for the truth of what wc say. As the Albany Journal says: "He is the 'coming man'." ;' It is a question for the future about many of them coming to this State, but it is a mclaucholy fact that we have not one half the labor wcnecd to day in this country. Large aud valuable rlantations, ot thou- sands ot acres, are lying idle to-day for no lack of capital, but simply inability to get labor. Did we not dcclarc that the possession of he ballot would instantly chance "tho lazy gnorant nigger" into an honored American citizen, in the opinion of the Democrats ? Beholdit comes to pass, even as was pre dicted. The Virginia papers amuse us greatly by their change of tone. We find the following clioice morsels in tuat old- ashioned advocate oLStatcs rights, seces sion and a white man's government," the Richmond Whig : ''Our Colored Allies. In the bustle and excitement of election day, and iu our eager ness to collect ana arrange tlie election news on the night of that memorable day. we C9uld not hud time to make, in our issue of the 7th, our acknowledgements to those of our colored friends who contributed to the success of our cause.
