The compresses of this city will start
up, on or acont tbe 1st of Octoler
Last season the city only had one,
which had a -capacity of 1,200 bales
per day; now there a re tb ree, w i th a
capacity of 3,600. No ship need wait
after it obtains the cotton for her cargo,
all can be loaded in a very few days.
This very great facility, added to our
commercial Interest in hauling cotton,
will add very much to the interest of
the city, and in a very few months our
merchants may look for lively times in
traded and hundreds of additional la
borers will be employed also. Good
times coming. '

while seated at his desk in his office on
Monday last, about noon, was suddenly
striken with paralysis. Ife was remov
ed to a room adjoining the oQce, and
Drs. Walker and Lane called in, when
it Was found that his entire fight side
was more or less affected, and he was
unable to articulate with' sufficient dis-
tinctness to be understood .except occa
sionally a word. He retained his con-
consciousness, however, sufficiently to
recognise suck of his friends as called
to see him, and to understand any re
marks made to him. He was removed
to his residence on Thursdayaand on
