WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, SUNDAY,
baCk dollar worth a dollar in coin, atid
just as regularly the. Democratic party
opposed them. The pa'nic came. Then,
for the time the parties seemed to
change, front. The Democrats clam
ored for.morp currency. They wanted
greenbacks. Greenbacks must take the
place of the National bank currency
The printing presses must be .set run
ning. In short, ; the 'greenback croze
was upon us. It. was in the dawn of
this crazo that. Senator Jnhn Sherman
brought lorwjird his bill providing -for
resumption in 187f. Jb-w the. Demo
crats laughed and jeered at that meas
ure the whole country: knows. .Many
Iiepublicans doubted the widt-m of the
measure. Senator Slferniaii ..persevered.
Everywhere Tufpiibik-aYis said, "We da
not want to t.iko ?bc greenbacks out tf

Senator dohn Sherman became See
retaryofthe Treasury and carried out
the law which he. had framed and
passed amid si niueh violent, opposi
tion from the Democratic party, and
uouut wiiin his own. What, dots re
sumption really mean? Simply that
any person Holding greenbacks can
now present them at some National
treasury and gut gold or sil ver, on de
mand. That is all. The Iiepublicans
alone have made a greenback dollar
worth a dollar in gold or silver.
Tin; riiKsKNi ;::u;mja( K (jrWnox.
There are now oyer $2f)tmUiHt.Ui
gold and silver coin stored, iu . the
treasury vaults. It was txp'.cted that
a large portion of this grtat coin re
serve would be drawn-out to redeem
greenbacks. That is what this coin re
serve is-held for. - JUit,; now. w!k:ii the
Krecnback is just as good as a dollar in
gold people prelcr them to gold, aud
keep thorn. Gold is flowing 'In from
abroad. We arc daily con ing silver.
The great reserve of coin i -constantly
growjng larger. Now the,. greenbacks
or legal tenders, about 0,"f o not jn
in all, form part of life war -ib bl of the
country. Iiut a i-ortio i of the debt can
ouly be paid by having th(grcenhaek-s
or legal tenders prisc-nteft tor redemp
tion in coin. The pith and ruint m
the resident's and Secretary Shermai.'-
recommendation to Congress is simpiv'
that the. greenbacks inayi be called in
and paid otP in coiiryarid. thus how
that Biiich gold and silver go out of the
treasury where it is now idle, into cir-.
culation among the people."""-. It is not a
proposition to contract, thy currcucv.
but simply n Proposal to substitute gold
and silver for puper, and at the same
time pay so much of the national debt.
''it is suryn rttiNciiM.!:.
No one will for a moment deny that:
The only question is, "Is' it good poli
cy to disturb the country at this mo

question', of national 'finance' ' The
llepubiicails, as a party, say "no I ' It
is' true that the legal tender C rins a
portion of the war debt. Ihit it bears
no interest, and it is lit M by the people.
They know the coin is in the treasury.
They simply .av : "Let it stay-there.'.'
They find the gretnbaek more conven

LETTER FROM VENDJSR.
BcBOAAr, Pender Co., Hf. C,
December 6, 1879.
Editok Post : Since my last, the
time for tho renewal of "Bonds" for
county officials has come and gone, all
except tho register of Deeds renewal,
I am informed, with their old eurctie.
Another month was .allowed tho Regis
ter of Deeds, a Republican (so called,
whose office as I spoke of in my HUt is
run by the Probate Judge, a Democrat,)
to present his bond. The "Boom" still
continues and judging from tho many
improvements, ono of which, the most
noticeable, an elegant brick chimney
has been erected to the building by tho
county, belonging to the Pmbato Jadge'
and rented by him to the county for
offices. Stoves had been provided for
the building by the county. Why this
expense of n chimney ? is, the county
out of debt I It must be or a useless
expenditure of this kind would not have
been countenanced by the Chairman of
County Commissioners Some attribute
it to a personal benefit. One thing, I
do know, that the Chairman's son-in-
law teaches school in tho upper story of
this building that is rented, or supposed
to be, by tho county. Vbat wo con
tend for, i, that tho landlord should
bear the expense of improvement to his
own property b make it as per con-
trapt comfortable.
I am not prepared to say what rent.
if any, is paid to the county for the use
of a part of the building for purposes
other than thoso pertaining to county
affairs. If not then wc are paying taxes
to support personal gain. Theso 'qucs- (
tions are growing deep into the minds of
those that think for themselves. "With
all of theso facts, which will, with many
more, bo explained to the people before
the next election. You will please ad
vance my figures-, quoted in last nt 200.
The most sanguine Democrats concede
the county to the Republicans by fignres
nearly reaching . those named by' me.
Let their opinions bo as they may,
'lace Pender at the hend of IdSO's cal
ndar, Republican ninjorfty 7(H1 and
two precincts to hear front. In my
next I will irive voti sometluiiir of the
clings as to your State and National
tickets. f Youm. !
