With'th liberty transmitted by hcir forefathers, they nave inherited the spirit to defend it. ' The cho.'ce between war and abject submission is be fore them. To such a-'proposal, brave men with armain their hands can have but one alswer. They can tot barter manhood for peace,' nor the right of self-government for life or property. But justice to them requires a sterner admonition to those who have abandoned their comrades in the hour of peril. A last opportunity is offered them to wipe out the dis grace and escape the punishment of their crimes. By authority of tbe President of the Confederate States, a, pardon is announced to such deserters and men improperly absent as ehall return to the commands to which they belong within the shortest possible time, not exceeding twenty days tiom the publication of this cider; at the headquarters ot tho departlknt in which they may be. Those who may be prevented by interrnption'of com munications, .may report, within the time specified to tbe nearesi enrolling officer or other officer on duty, to b forwarded as eoon as practicable, and upon pre senting a certificate from such officer showing compli ance with this requirement, will leceive the pardon here by offered. : Those who have deserted to the service of the enemy, or who hve deserted after ha vie g been once pardoned for the same offence, and those wno shall desert, or ab sent themaelvis without authority after the publication of this order, are excluded from i s benefits.-Xor does the tffcr of pardon extend to other offences than deser tion and ab'ence without permission.
