Meeting of Citizenh. At a meeting ut UieItizena of Itleigb, held at Metrolxilitan 1 1 all, "on ron day evening, iSMh ult., the follow ing resolutions, expressive of the feeling of this community nt the death of Mayor Separk, were unan imously adopted : Almighty God in His Providence has removed from earth Joseph H. Separk, Mayor of the City of Ral eigh, and it is becoming that we his fellow-citizens and friends should give public; expression of our ap preciation of him as a man and as chief magistrate of our city and our sense of sorrow at his death.' There fore, liesofred, that in the death of Jo seph H. Separk the city of Italeigh has lost a faithful and vigilant pub lic officer, one fearless but just in the discharge of his official duties and who in all his various relations in life, has proven himself beyond reproach, unselfish, impartial, anil thoroughly imbued with a deep in terest for the public weal. Resolved, That this community has lost an upright, high-minded and christian citizen, who had se cured the confidence of the public by his own intrinsic merit and who by his life and character reflected honor not only upon his fellow me chanics of the city of Raleigh but ujon each and every class of its citizens. Jiesolved, That wo tender to his afflicted family the assurance of our profound sympathy in this hour of their breavement. Retolved, That as citizens of Ital eigh we close our places of business between the hours of 'J and t p. in., to-morrow. Resolved, That the Chairman of this meeting transmit a copy of these resolutions to the family of the deceased and a copy bo furnish ed the city press for publication. A Distressing Homicide. On the afternoon of Thursday, PJth ult., a most distressing homicide was committed in Haywood county, the particulars, as far as we have been able to gather them, being as follows : Three young men, Strange, Bridg ets and Williams, the two first of Wilmington and the latter of Fay etlcville, had arranged with James Murray, a nephew of Sheriff Mur ray, of Haywood county, to take them in a vehicle from Wayncsville to the Catalouchee river on a fishing excursion. Before setting out some words passed letween young Strange and Murray caused by a delay in starting. It seems that Murray during the altercation gave Strange the lie, which the latter un dertook to resist at the time by striking Murray with a chair but was prevented from so doing by those around. Peace having been restored, the nartv set out for the river. About thirteen miles from the village the wheel of the rear vehide broke down. Murray's wagon, which was in front, stopped, and his pas sengers alighted for the purpose of going back to render assistance. It became necessary to send the wheel off to a shop for repair, and during the delay, two of the young men commenced playing cards for amusement. Strange, about this time, asked young Bridgers to loan him his pistol which he did.remark ing at the time, 14 Don't shoot away all my cartridges, Tom." The re port of a pistol was heard in a short time after, and in a few seconds young Murray staggered near the party, fell on his knees in the road and pooh expired. No one witness ed the shooting nor knew what passed between Strange and Mur ray. Strange soon made his ap pearance and was at once arrested by his friends and turned over to the authorities. Bridgers was sub sequently arrested and both of the young men are now in jail. The affair has caused great excite ment in that section of the State. It is indeed a sad commentary upon the practice of allowing young men unbridled license to travel around the country without older heads to guide them and with no object in view but the pursuit of those so called pleasures which often lead to the commission of vicious and ille gal acts.
