The Sunday school of the Free Church of the Good Shepherd went out pic-nicking on Tuesday. We are glad to notice that Audi tor Reilly'a health has wonderiully improved within the last month or two. On Monday the main cornices of the new post-office building: were placed in position. They are ele gantly carved, and add greatly to the beauty of the building. His Excellency, Gov. Brogden, accompanied by Col. I. J. Young, left the city on Monday to attend the mtmorial exercises in Wil mington, which tW nlace to-day Joseph Curtis, the well known Ice cream vender, has procured his license and is out on the streets airdn. Bia Ego. We were shown yes terday a Cochin China hen's egg, measuring seven inches around one way and eight tho other. The same hen has produced three in succes sion about the same size, and the prospect is good for many more. Tho hen belongs to Mr. Wm. M. Brown, our able manager and pub- s I The moralist who said. "This world is full of change nothing but change' certainly didn't know what he was talking about. Why, we have had to run nil over town, in the blistering heat, to get change for a five dollar note, presented by a delinquent debtor, who thought we couldn't change It; and he'd es cape for another six months. The speakers were enthusiastically received, and we have no doubt the Republicans of St. Mathews township will profit by tneir visit. Tut, Tut, Aunt Dicey ! Old Aunt Dicey Johns, who is about 70 years old, was on Friday arrested and put in jail in this city for steal ing bacon from the smoke-house of Mr. Siinford Wheeler, of Buck Horn township, on Sunday night, in com pany with several members of her family. Aunt Dicey was a visitor to our city once before, in conse- quenceof taking a hog which didn't belong to her, and found guilty, but Judgv Watts, on account of her ad vanced age aud infirm condition, suspended sentence in her gase. O, Aunt Dicy 2 dare surprised at you, after hearing Judge Watts' characteristic lecture on that ccca- sion, anu we fear that your old bones will soon lie nioundering in the penitentiary graveyard ! The clewing exercises of Chas. N. Hunter's schoo at Shoe Heel, will took place on the 31st ult., on which occasion he delivered an address studiously nrenared bv - ? himself, entitled, 'fhe Negro as a Citizen, or the Duties of an Amer- can irtemaii." Mr. Hunter will make a canvass in behalf of the Constitution and Vrf. in the tovv.is of Chariot le, Salisbury, Gretiuboro and Hillsboro, on his return home, and we hope all our Republican friei.ds will respond liberally to his calls, as we cannot plblish a good paper without money Mr. Hun- ter is a man of Considerable educa tion, grfbd bound senseand a grace ful writer, and hasdon agreatde-.il in the cause of education among the colored people of North Carolina. No better selection could .have been made, and we may expect so.n to see theSer.m greatly imprtyed. Mr. Syme's long and varied expe rience in the newspaper busjiess fully qualifies him for the position of manager of a metropolitan dilly. While theSentuiel is very obnox jus 4n its political views, we woult be glad to see It prosper for the sak 3 of the newspaper enterprise ; in other words, of the two evils in the Dem ocratic dailies, we would pnfer this to the other, which is nor oily rotten politically, but morally. Slander. The public man who tries to answer every slander set afloat against him will be kept as busy as a thin-skinned fishermin on a salt meadow in mosquito time. He may kill off a dozen tormen tors, but a hundred will come to their funeral. Happy is the mn who can sit unmoved in the pre, ence of partisan mallceu and feel that his record is all right, and that the confidence of the people in hi integrity cannot be shaken by the idle breath cf slander. Washington Republic. The Orphans at OxpoRD.The news comes to us that there is a great deal of sickness among the little orphans at the Oxford Asylum, and that the contributions are not sufficient to enable the managers to secure the necessary medicines for them. A society of little girls in Goldsboro recently gave an enter tainment and realized more than a hundred dollars for the little suf ferers. The ladies of Raleigh should no doubt two hundred dollars could be easily raised here by a similar entertainment to that recently given in Goldsboro ; . and while a hundred helpless little orphans are suffering for the necessaries of lifb within fifty miles of us, is there much honor in sending a fine flag to Philadelphia, at an enormous cost, which will probabiy;neverirb6 noticed, when not an effort id wade for the reli if of these orphans?, , And again : the - ladles of Hills-, boro have been earnestly' laboring. i i . t rf ' ' ft. .'
