Mr. O Ferrall finding further resistance futile left the chamber. TfTen the in famous work was done in short or der and with fiendish delight. As coming from him the I tory cannot be anything but strict I If in accordance with tho facts. irough Mr. Cooper's garden there f some years ago, a sewer mace redwood timber. This sewer was again cased by an outside sewer. Across tho eewcr there was built a brick wall many feet high, and in such a way that it was pierced by the inner sewer, which it enclosed tightly, while the outside sewer ended abruptly against the wall. The outside fewer casing had in course of time decayed, and .1 en-. calyptus tree standing some sixty feet away had taken advantage of this and hcnt one of its roots to the coveted sjxt in as direct a line as pHsi!le. Here the root entered. the outside sewer and followed its course as far as it coaild. At last it cimc to the wall which bhut off its course, and it could go no fur ther, the inside sewer being per fectly tight. But on tho other side of the M-all tho Eewcr and its double casing continued, and this eucalyp tus tree evidently knew how to get there. Some three feet high in the brick wall there was a little hole an inch or two in diameter, and this the eucalyptus tree was aware of, as lis oig rooi negan to ciimo tne urv wall and face the sun and wind until it found the hole, through which it descended on the other side and. entered the sewer again, and follow ed it along as formerly. How, did the tree know of the, 'hole in the wall? How did it know that the sewer was on the other'side ! Did it smell, and it it did,; how could it direct the root to go and find the place with such precision I The roots of any plant growi always and rrv 111 the direction of its a a w a a I a- -- - - Highest of all ia Leavcxua Power. IL Smith has on ex hibition in his store, attracts many visitors daily, and has caused . a great deal of disenssion. The por trait formerly rested on the tnantel- Siece at Mr. Smiths residence at fount Olive." f Recently, during a heavy storm, 1 a lightning flash struck it. The frame was demol ished, but the flash left on the por trait a clearly defined picture of an angel with outstretched wings overshadowing Mr. Taylor's head, the arms encircling his neck and the right hand holding a bunch of flowers. The pose of the angel suggests protection and benediction. The dark line showing lhe light ning's journey al6n le cardboard turns rbraptly just above the Jaco of Mr. Taylor, giving the spectator the idea that the angel changed the lightning's course. Superstitious people consider it as an indication that M Taylor is in heaven, but Mr. Smith explains the phenomenon by saying that the picture of an angel exactly like that which appears on the Taylor por trait was on the back of a photo graph near bv.
