tensive to have !een ae ulental. It
was ihc delibemte and pre-arranged
.-yttemttf the Republican campaign.
It was intended to lead the public
to believe that Ohio was iu a per
fect furor of : enthusiasm over Me
Kinley, and for a time it served its
purpom. Not only the Republican
newspapers and Republican johti
cians lent thenolviw to the decep
tion, but JMajor MeKinley himself
never allowed such a little thing as
the truth to stand in the way of his
making a good joint. Ho has utter
ed moredeliWrate falsehoixjion the
fetnmp in the past'; six weeks than
have ever been crammed down Ohio
throats in any six years before.
Nowhere but in Ada, where lie knew
that he would be contradicted, has
he omitted to declare that "the wool
of tho world is lower' as one expla
nation of the fall iu price of Ohio
wool. In every speech but the one
at Ada, he ban declared that tin was
cheaper than ever Ik fore, lie de
clares everywhere that ho has "a list
of fifty article in common use which
are cheaper to-day I than when the
Tariff bill was passed," but he never
cites anything from his list except
sugar, boots and slbe., binding twine
und other articles,' which have de
clined lccau3o the-tax on them was
removed or reduced, an explanation
of tlu; decline in price whiclijie in
variably omits to give. MajoivMr
Kinley has missed no opportunity
to add to the hrdo of blutf in which
his campaign is enveloped by theat
rical exhibition. His persona! par
ticipation in the contemptible tin
plate fraud at Pbpua was only one
instance in which he has lent him
tplf to methods worthy of a constab
ulary contest in ward politics.
The fame of the Piqua perform
ance has spread to every little ham
let. Tin-plate bulges are leing
laughed out of sight and the expres
sion, "tin-plate liar," originated at
the beginning of the campaign by
the Republican, as a term of oppro
brium for democrats, has lecoine in
stead a term of derision applicable
to the Republican and is so under
stood throughout the btate. "Wool
can't be mentioned at a public meet
ing without raising a laugh and the
farmers weai for badges tufts of wool
on a ribbon, with the inscription, "21
eents Hr pound;! this is what the
tariff has done for us." The gross
exaggeration of the size and enthu
siasm of Republican meetings has
reacted also. No Republican paper
ventures now to put over seven or
eight thousand eop!e at meetings
that two weeks ao would have been
!r rated at tiltv thousand, and it is a
standard joke throughout the State,
iu Speaking of the size of a meeting
to ask whether the figures ''arc Re
publican measure.?' The campaign
of bluff, bluster ind lies has been
transformed" into cine of explanation,
evasion and denial.
How completely the Republican
crest has been clipped and Republi
can bnmptiousntts chilled is snown
by a little incident that was not aa
incident of the joint debate at Ada.
The Republicans had arranged a
scheme to bolster up the tin-plate
fraud and stampede the meeting
while it was in progress. Telegrams
were to be sent from concerns iu

J,
A newspaper, if it has any brains,
conscience and muscle, brick of it,
must continually decide 1-ctv.een do
ing its duty and injuring its pocket.
In any position but that of an edi
tor the public is able to separate the
individual home from the collective
citizen, lint if the editor does not
phase them it's his porket they aim
at. Thus it is that newspapers learn
who their friends are. The man
who reads a newspaper and admires
it all the year round, yet gives his
business snpport to some other con
cern whose principles he detests, is
t ot a friend of the foimcr paper.
Admiration hne will not run a
newspaper." Sooner or later such
admirers will lin l that the object of
their aO'ectionr has become wedded
to other ways that they do not ad
mire in other words, a newspaper
is 'com polled in order to live,?t eek
the friendship of tlKse who are not
so platoeic in their love, but unite
that practical esteem with sentiment
that binds mutual admiration in
other professions. There arp too
many men wdio expect an editor to
slave in defense of theirpct notions
and hobbies, advocate, jheir views
against the strongest opposition and
coolly withhold the bushiess support
by which alone smaH (newspapers
can live. j
Talk about a newspaper having a
public duty to perform!, an editor
having to labor for his principles, is
cheap when others stand back and,
while extending a lukewarm neu
trality with one hand are tilling their
pockets with the other ' hand, as a
result of the editor's labor for his
principles which they admire but do
not support. The Ai' i'mwe

One thing, however, is certain.
Tho Speaker of tho next House,
when, nnally elected, m usl a(proacif
the framing of his committees with
fear aid trembling. He will be
confronted, first of all, with the
precedent which h.-.s bccom an
unwritten 1 iw, and which, if fol
lowed, would place at the- head of
every committi-e in the next Con-gre.-'i
the Democrat who stood lint
in the iniiiorit3 on that committee
dating Sjeaker Reed's dispensa
tion.. . To olioy this law will be to
give tho chairmanships bf , alout
foity out of the fifty-six committees
to .Southern men, and to risk tho
immediate cry of sectionalism. It
tlie rule be disrcirarded, there iwill
be no "end of fi ic: ion, for men wtms e

will not bo superseded without a

-Tli'j situation isiu-t only interest
in:, but it is important as a factor
in the canvass which is now so hear
a'- band. Tjie present conditions,
t.'K?, :tre novel. Heretofore, when
th? liouso was in tho hands of the
Democrats. o n.any of the latter
came from ti:o South that tho per

.nutter of comparatively little eon:

yt art he cause is difTercct. There
will, bo two hundred and thirtv-;
eight Democrats, in the next House.
Or this ntunbt r toe hundred and
twenty-one will come from north
of-Ma.suti and Dixon's line and one
hi.tubvd and seventeen, from south
of it, itciudi:tgs tbe Farmers' AUi
