The discovery of silk k attributed l jto one of the wives of the eelebrated Emperor of China, Hoangti, who reigned- about two thousand years ; before the Christian era. and since ' ' that time a special spot' lias always been allotted in the garden of the . Chinese royal palace to the cultiva-' : tion of the mulberry tree called in Chinese the " golden tree" and to the keeping of silk worms. The first ilk dress mentioned in history was made not for a sovereign nor a pretty , woman, but for the, monster in hui -man shape, Hellgobalus. Persian monks who came to Constantinople revealed to the Emperor Justinian the secret of the production of silkr and gave him some silkworms. From Greece the art parsed into Italy a the end of the thirteenth century. When the Popes left Rome to settle at Avignon, France, they introduced into that country the secret which had been kept by the Italians; and then Louis XL, established At Tours a manufactory of ilk fabrics. Francis I. founded the Lyons wlk works, which to this day have kept the first rank. Henry It., of France, wore the first 'pair' of silk hose ever made, at the wedding of his sister. ! There is a little eotton mill in Westminster, Ga., which takes the cotton from the pod on the plantation where it grows and converts it by a simple and inexpensive process into yarn. By this transformation the cotton is increased in value from three to seventeen cents a pound. This is not the only advance, as the cotton, if .not made into 3arn , must be taxed for ginning, compessing, baggiug, tying, weighing, storage, wharfage, and oher transportation charges. The advantage of the new process is so apparent that the cotton planters seriously propose to estab lish fust such mills among their lan tations as a preparatory step to the establishment of cotton cloth manu factories, to compete with those of New England. This method is cer tainly great improvement over those that prevailed fifty 3'ears ago, before the railroad era. Tlien there was a mill of 400 spindles at Mill Springs J Ky. The plantes of that day would haul ;their cotton from as far south as Iluiitsyille, Ala., to the mill. Af ter it was spun into yarn' it was agaiu hauled to Louisville and ex changed for goods, which were con veyed iu Wagons to the spot where the cotton grew J ; J -' . y '. ' Xfc nunnpr In Which .a Tkiiii Girl ' m jLrpf'Alircs Tlie San Antnuio correspondent of !he Galveston .ttrs tells the following story of a wonderful surgical operation recently performed in lhatcUy. Aboui two years ago Mr. S 'T Luiuley, at that lime living in Pennsylvania had the misfortune to have his little daugi -ler Jeste drink a solution of lye, which a, negro woman bad carelessly left on the table. A large qnautity of the cor rosive liquid was swallowed. Death is tne certain resuit in such cases. Then." have been quite a number ; of cases ii. Sua Ant uio, where children drink concentrated lye, and none have sui vived except iu that iustance. The lye destroys the mucous membrane, aud a striclme of the oesophagus is formed, which means that l he throat, or at least the channel through which the food goes Into the stomach, is drawn to. gether or contracted to such a degree that only liquids, aud not much 'of them, cau pas through. Such was the condition of the little girl, ' Jessie Lumley, when, she wis brought to Sau Autouio lor treaiment. The girl vas very" much emacia ed, could not swallow even liquid for foui days at a time. As it was the onI ciiaucH she had for life, her parents consented that the operation of making an opening in the stomach should t e attempted. An incision four inches loug was made a few inches to the hft of tne pit of the stomach, much stitcL ing being required. Through this in ct4oa the stomach is reached. Tl.e next part of he operation required the most delicate handling imaginable. It consisted in sewing the stomach to the walls of the abdomen, but the greatest care had to be taken nut to penetrate the stomach itself. The needle and stitches only penetrated the ski j of ttic stomach. The result is that the stomach as the wound gradually healed, grew to the walls of tM abdomen: , The patient was put under the in flaence of chloroform, and the opera tion f successfully performed. Unfor- tunately the child had an attack of j chills and fever, which had to be cured, which gave it a setback. The oper.;- tion described took place three weeks! aco -Tbe stomach grew on the sides of the abdomen, nmd eight days ago th final operation of making a small in cwon into the stomaoh. through which the food was to pass, was performed, and twice a day during the past week a beef-steak cut p line has been passed with the forceps into the stomach and the child is steadily gaioi g strength. . The following additional facts may be of interei-t t the meiltc d fraternity and o hers interested: No partrcle ol solid food has passed through the child's throat since the MCciUcftt. A grain of rice nearly strangles tier. Milk is als injccieil tut the stomtch throuah the oiHjniiiij. The only poMbie daoger is from the wnnd closiag-up liewe it is kept Open with cottoo. j At first a plug of expansive cotton was used. Thcie -s ni; reason why the child 8huld nt become stout and healthy. The fotl digests readily, just as if chewed and swallowed. To: the inquiry if thi mde of taking nourishment would have1 to be kept up through life n definite answer was given, as it dejemls in the po-sibility ot reducing the strii aire of the throat. ! . m - " - t . - ; The handsomest assortment of j Mens' and Boys' Clothing offered at Jos.
