Members of the Iesrlslatare In
dicted for Gambling-.
" St. ( Louis, June 4. A dispatch
from : Austin, Xex., says that the
grand jury has . indicted from forty
. to fifty members of , the . Legislature
for gambling, Quite a number of
those indicted have left money with
counsel to plead guilty and pay a
niinimum fine, rather than go to trial
; iu court. i ;'.
Another dispatch from the ' same
pla.ee eays that some one entered the
County Clerk's office Saturday night
aad stole all the indictments re
turned by the grand jury for viola
tions of the gambling law, includiug
those against the!; members of the
Legislature.' There is no clue to the
thief, but sperting circles are greatly
elated.
Wilmington Star : The storm of
Saturday afternoon last did consider
a!)le damage. A great many fences
. were prostrated, and the driving rain
beat through, a great many houses,
'flooding them with water and in
many instances (damaging furniture.
Buildings that were never known to
4 leak. before, succumbed to the com-
biued assaults of the furious elements.
A number of bad wash-outs are re
ported, the mpst serious of which are
in the neighborhood of Front and
Castle, Second and Ann, and Thir
teenth and . Market t streets. The
vkitchen on the premises of the
tliirsley ibuse, corner, of Third, and
Ann streets, occupied by Mr.
Btirruss, was .. undermined by . the
flood of W4ter . and was left inclined
to one, side in such a manner as lo
threaten Jts instant demolishment.
At the County Poor House, where
the wind had full Bcope serious ap
prehensions were felt that the build,
ing would be swept away. - As it
wp, a large portion of the stockade
was prostrated. The wind was from
a .point which 4s, termed uorth-north-w!est,..
and tbecefore blew nearly
directly J off-shore, which : renders
serious. disasters at sea. less probable
than was at,firs.t supposed.
