Probabfy the fastest train in America is the afternoon express on the Canada Atlantic Railway, which leaves Coteae Station at 5.35 and reaches Ottawa, dnttrot 78 miies, t 7.09, having made one stop of three mi tin les at Alexandria. Thia ia al most exactly fifty miles an hour. The fastest train in the world is probably the "Flying Dutchman," which runs without stopping from London to Bristol, , a distance of 11811-4 miles, in just two hours a rate, of 59 1-8 miles an hour. Courage is; a noble trait 'With some it requires greater courage, to live than H does to die. When dis ease racks lb frame,, whenf sores cover the person, when aches are in every joint, when the muscles are soft and flabby, when the least exer tion gives fatigne, when the mind is tilled with 1 gloom and despondency, what is there in life wo.rth living, and yet many eke oot just such a miserable existence, 4iving only for those who love them. George ,Wxibam and Captwu Win. Biggs, of Oxford;Md1ed last week. Mr. D. W. Whitaker has sold the f Person County News to a company of gentlemen from that county who propose to publish it to the very best interest of its patrons. We wish them much success. Reidsville Weekly : Our farmer friends in this section have been sorely pressed this year; first' with the drought which prevented the full growth ot their crops and now the latter rains which prevent tbe saving of the little made in spite of adverse circumstances. When you get to talking about raising children, always look to North Carolina. The Hickory Car olinian says : Mrs. Bryant Huffman, of Onslow cocnty, has a babe whic weighed only -two pounds, clothes and all, soon after birth. At one month it weighed 2 1-2 pounds. Mr. Huffman has married twice and has been blessed with 23 children. The Wilmington Star tells us that in that city there are two , girls and a boy who are perfect albinos and their parents are negroes. The skin of these children is perfectly white. their eyes a bright blue, and their hair and eye-brow of tbe color ami f consistency of sheep's wool. An other singular thing 14. the fourth Child who is of a dark ginger-cake color. . Beaufort Telephone : We have in this town a colored man who is as much of a prodigy as the veritable "Blind Tom." His name is Zacb. Taylor, born in Carteret county, of parents who were slaves, is thirty three years ot age, never went to school in his life, and yet he can build a mill, repair a watch, tune a piano, or print a newspaper. The most remarkable gift he has, how ever, is the ability to repeat Scrip ture, which he can o for hours at a time without making a mistake. There isn't bis equal in North Caro lina'or in tbe South, for that matter. . , Morganton -Mountaineer : Among tbe convicts who are at work on the Ducktown branch of the Western North Carolina railroad ia. an .old negro named Joe Hicks, whose time has expired long ago, but who likes the fare and treatment he gels there so well that he sticks to bia post and does the same amount of labor that he did before he bad served out his term. -KHd Joe,w as they call 'him, has built an odd looking, hark hut on the mountain side near the works, where he sleeps; his only-companion being a 'peV bear ; tba. 'shares hh meals , and his bed. He keeps 'a flock of. chickens and turkeys, and makes-a little pocket money by sell ing these to ' tbe railroad men. He likes) bis business, and is as happy ias if he were Governor of .the State. ADVICE TO MOTHERS. Are you disturbed at, nigh Land broken ot your rest by a sick child suffering and crying with pain of cutting teeth ? If so, send at once and get a bottle of Mrs. Winslow's Nothing Syrop for Children Teeth ing. Its value is incalculable. It will relieve ihe poor little sufferer immeaiately. . Depend upon it, mothers, there is no mistake about it. It cures dysentery and diarrhoea, regulates the stomach and bowels, cures wind colic, softens- the gums, reduces inflammation, and gives tone and energy to the whole system. Mrs. Window's Soothing Syrup for Children Teething is pleasant tolbe taste, and is the prescription of one of the oldest and best femsle phvui olans and nurses lh tbe UhTted States, and is for sate " by all druggists throughout the world. Price 25 ceaU a bottle. : The most diusiiuj ihing we , know of is the use of profane lao fiuage, jn other word, cursing, sweariug, tfcc. ; yet it in heard on the streets every day, and it is be-. w""s common mat n is tnara.y thoogbt that a man can tell a good yVjbile qm .this subject there is one ether .thing we want to condemn, sd that is tbe repeating orinde- cent anecdotes. It is bad enough tipr men in the ordinary walks of Jife to do this, but when a church member, one who ought to be an example for bis fellow man, calls bis eompamons anu the youth of the land around him and tells them such things as would shock the modesty of any decent man, we say it is ridiculous.
