Garden ard Fsres. describes some interesting experiment with Madeira vines, which illustrate ho' closely the actions of certain plants re semble those of animals. The experiment er's attention had been attracted to the peculiar movements of the vine in iti spiral ascent of a stick. We quote hii report of the expepimctits: If allowed to grow a few inches above the support, the Vxtremity of the plan' will sway backward and forward a few hours, and then will enter oa a retrulai revolving movement, alway3 from right to left, or contrary to the direction ir which the hands of a watch move. Out revolution is made in three hours. One of the plact3 observed began t. grow on April 1st, and at the end of six teen days it wa3 eighteen inches high. It was too heavy to stand erect, and begat to fall away from tho pot, which stood on a table, toward the floor. This war done gradually and apparently fith con scious care. It seemedAo feel at timet that it was letting itself down too fasi , . . , vi , and would stop with a jerk, like a nod uirg cnua nan asieep. t , When near the floor it began describ ing ellipses about three inches in diam eter with its upturned extremity. -On-! the nineteenth it was venty-six inches j in length, and would describe a crescenl shaped loop seventeen inches in length, and six inches wide in about two .rours. On the twenty-third it revolved with less regularity, and at time3 drooped as il weary or discouraged in trying to tind something on which to entwine itself. On the twenty-sixth a new route ol" travel was begun, consisting of a circh on the left, a circle on tho right, and sc on, alternately. The track of the ex tremity of tho vine was traced with i pencil, and at the end of twelve hours i' : measured six feet nine inches. On May 1st the vine was lifted unc tied to a vertical support. It remained quiet for two days, and then begai growing again. j Another vine, during several days ot j cloudy weather, uncoiled itself from iti J stick and reached away toward the b'ghi at an angle of forty-five degrees with the horizon. It was carefully recoiled about its stick, but when it had grown abou1 three inches longer, it unwound "'itsei and stood away toward the window a before. Time afbr time it was brough' back to the support, but invariably lefi it,snntil bright sunny weather returned,.-:? after which it showed no disposition to stop its twining growth. Attempts were made to induce anothe; plant to grow in a direction opposite U its normal 'one, but.no ingenuity -could deceive it as to its iVoper course. A Very Odd Battle. - As T. W. Singer and David Scully, of Laughlinstown, were on their way home from Ligonier a few days ago, a most in teresting scene presented itself at a point on the turnpike near the brick house. ti was a mink and a blicksnake fight ing. The mink would pounce upon the snake and sink its sharp tecth into its body every time. The snake would coil tself up and strike at the rnink, but it3 strokes were like those of a drunken man. When its blow was . spent the mink was not there, but in return dealt ' saakc a pouncc that trough ight blood frightcncl at "the specUtors and fled, A A SA WvJ A S. 1- A i S a- tU k-f V i when the snake was dismtched, LigohUr Echo.
