By a vote of 184 to 11 the House
ot Representatives decided to pro
pose a constitutional amendment
making Senators elective by the
people.
Two men were killed and seven
injured on the American ships in
the bombardment at San Juan. The
ships were not injured, and the fleet
sailed for Key West after the bom
bardment.
Since the declaration of war the
United States navy has taken nine
Spanish steamers, nine schooners,
two sloops and several fishing
smacks, not to mention the destruc
tion of the Spanish fleet at Manila.
The value of the ships taken as prize
money is $3,000,000. The Spaniards
have taken one American boat val
ued at $40,000.

.A. 11 Honored ^OI1.
It is with a great degree of pride
that we chronicle the success of a
son of a sister C unty and town
We refer to Mr. Wi lia»n App Jones,
son of Mr. James E Jones, of Hills
boro, N. C., and grandson of Mr. T.
K. Glenn, one of Person County’s
oldest and most intelligent citizens.
Mr. Jones entered Wake Forest
College in 1889, where he developed
a phenomenal capacity as a student,
graduating in 1893, with aegree of
A. B. After a year with t he Dal
ton Farrow Tobacco Co., Winston,
N. C , he returned to Wake Forest
for special work in Chemistry and
German. In 1895 Mr. Jones began
studies in Johns Hopkins Univer
sity of Baltimore, and there, as we
learn, he has attained to a remark
able success and distinction. For
two years he held a North Carolina
scholarship and in June last was ap
pointed Senior Fellow of the Chem
ical Department, an honorary as
well as lucrative position. He was
elected also by his fellow-students
President of one of the Chemical
Societies ot the University, and re
cently has bad the honor of being
elected to the Phi. Beta Kappa So
ciety of Maryland by reason of his
scholarship.
He will on June 14th, next, be
graduated from the University with
the degree of Doctor of Philosophy,
having secured the highest honors io
the gift of the Hopkins University.
Mr. Jones’ career is an honor to
North Carolina and his college; and
we doubt not that he will be heard
from in the scientific world.

and it always stops them in two
minutes. I consider DeWitt’s Witch
Hazel Salve the greatest pile cure
on the market.” W. A Hayes.
Each regiment of North Carolina
Volunteers is now not only divided
into companies but into battallions.
Four companies form a battaihon,
three battallions form a regiment,
each company has a battalion and
each battallion has a Major. The
Majors of the three battallions
of the First Regiment are Geo-ge
E. Butler, of Sampson county. Geo.
Rutzler, of Charlotte, and W. G.
Smith, of Asheville. It will be no
ticed that a regiment now has twelve
com] anies instead ot ten.
Uneasy lies the head that wears a

uneasiness. The income of the Em

$5,000; Emperor ot Germany, $8,

King of Belgium $6,500. The Pres

about $130 per day.

Mr. James Rowland of this vil
lage, states that for twenty-five years
his wife has been a sufferer from
rheumatism. A few nights ago she
was in such pain that she was nearly
crazy. She sent Mr. Rowland for
the doctor, but he had read of
Chamberlain’s Pain Balm and in
stead of going for the physician he
went to the store and secured a bot
tle of it. His wife did not approve
of Mr Rowland’s purchase at first,
but nevertheless applied the balm
thoroughly and in an hour’s time
was able to go to sleep. She now
applies it whenever she feels an
ache or a pain and finds that it al
ways gives relief. He says that no
medicine which she had used ever
did her as much good. The 25 and

American soldier or sailor to fall in
the present war, but the first real

—The next session of the North

be held in Asheville, June 14th to

has been prepared.

writes :—“DeWitt’s Witch Hazel

Charlotte News: At the ap
proaching term of the June Crim
jnal Court there are four capital
cases to be tried. This is something
unheard of in the history of Meck
lenburg county.
Kinston Free Press: Mr. J. M.
Mewborne, superintendent of the
penitentiary, came Friday afternoon
from Wilmington. He had been to
inspect the Slate farm at Castle
Hayne. He informs us that 5,100
acres of the State farms are planted
in cotton, 265 acres in lowland rice,
4,700 acres in corn, 600 acres in pea
nuts, 700 acres in wheat and 1,500
acres in oats.
Durham Sun: We were shown
to-day some of the richest and pret
tiest copper ore we have had the
privilege of seeing in some time. It
was taken from the copper mine of
Dake, Baldwin & Heartt—all Dur
ham men—situated in Granville
county, near Virginia, the copper
mining section. This ore is taken
out at a depth of seventy feet with
great ease, and is pronounced very
rich.
Durham Herald: Jule Carr de
serves a eulogy one mile long, for
the assurance to our brave boys,
that while they are away, at the call
of duty, fighting against Spain, he
will fight against “want” in their
homes here. This is one of the least
items of Jule Carr’s generosity and
noble christian character, and no
eulogy of ours can exceed that one
which he is building up at the Sav
ior’s right hand.
A woman in Newton besought
her son not to volunteer, and fol
lowed him to the train begging bun
to stay with her, but he refused, and
when the train left bearing her bov

sank upon the platform in a swoon.
We have no respect for patriotism
that excels love for a mother, wheu
there is no necessity for it in the
particular individual. That boy may
be a good patriotic citizen but we
should hesitate to rely upon his pa
triotism, or any other quality in him.
