But we believe this section of coun try is destined to become a wealthy and oowerful community, and that a . home newspaper should grow up with it, and aid and assist its growth "and influence. , When we look back at our condi tion at the close of the war, and com pare it with the present, we have great cause for congratulation. , When the wave of Sherman's bum mers swept over us in 1865, the coun try was lef't as desolate as if the plagues of Egypt had yjsitcd " us. In 1866 when there was an abund ance of money, cotton being worth thirty cents per pound, and corn ten dollars per barrel; people were grumb ling about their Poverty- that the war had. ruined them; and that they could barely make a living. "cotton was worth nothing had i gone down to fifteen cents per pound, and if some relief could not be found that the country would be ruined."- And to-day, when the cry of Hard Times is echoed in the mouth of near ly every one; when distress and ruin seem staring the whole land in the face; some people may say: we have heard the complaint so often, we hardly think there is much the matter. Merchants are complaining that they can't sell their goods; Physicians think the people are too poor to in dulge in the luxury of a sick spell ; Lawyers aver that their clients are so needy that they can't afford to get into litigation : and the Farmers, the back-bone and mainstay of trade in any community, know that they are in a worse, condition than they have ever been since the war.
