'highly improbable event,' the great question is to whom will the New York support go after Conkling. In New York pol itics Couklijjg interest and Grant liif terest are identical. As things now are, conkling wouiu nana over tne State to Grant if he could not get the prize himself; and this is just what the Secretary of the Treasury does not want to happen. Heretofore Conk ling has been made master, of New York through the powerful agency of the New lork Custom House where in his henchmen gathered from all parts of the State swarmed. Now Sherman rules the New York Custom,; House, and paralyzes it as a machine to help Conkling or Grant, and Conk-I ling's anxiety is lest it may be used to overthrow him in New York State. The Beaufort Storm. .: In Yazoo county Miss., on the 25th day of July last a most shameful out rage was perpetrated by a mob of five hundred men, representing the Democratic party of that county. One 1. M. Dixon, an indepeudant Democratic candidate for sheriff, was compelled by this mob to withdraw irom the canvass. ; We are glad to kuow that such a slate of affiiirs iu this State is an ira lK)sibility for we would be ashamed to belong to a party that would coun tenance it. These proceedings go very far towards proving the charge made by Republicans of the bulldo zing heretofore practiced in Mississippi. j ; Owing, to circumstances; the Demo cratic press of North Carolina since the war lias been reduced much below the plane of high independence and ower. It was so important ,to redeem the State from misrule that every edi tor felt compelled to submit to any kind of political management and wire-pulling in order not to give 'aid and comfort to the enemy We are not yet out of the woods, but when we remember how much newspapers have done to put politicians in otilce, and how little the latter have done for the newspapers, we fancy the . time has come to Wrt of halt a little. farm er and Mechanic. We think the time has now arrived tormation almost lost. Instead ol this plan a live teacher, by discarding maps and text books, might use the black board, and, commencing with the neighborhood in which the child lives, draw a man of the roads, the ) fields and iarm-houses, and theu a plan of the nearest towu known to the child. Then as the child acquires the right idea of reageographyVthe teach er might extend his drawings inter spersing with history, and make a map first of tho nearest towns and finally of the whoie State poinjting out the Summer resorts, Beaufort, Ashville and the different Springs at , which some of our people are now Summer ing," and then fol.low up with a1 history of the whole State. Then the map of the United States would follow, with . a history -first' of what happened dur ing our late war, and then of all our past history. Theu extend the teach ing to foreign lands, making it inter esting by a history of the people wher ever the geography of the country was taught. South Africa would call for the Zulu war; Frauce for Napoleon's campaigns, and the Franco Prussian war; Ru&sia for the life of Peter the Great,, and a dissertation, on the Nihilists. r ... With a plan like this a child would learn, not only a vast amount of facts which it would be impossible to for iate public feeling in her favor. The loroible statements, taken down from Mrs. Sprague's own lips, iu ref erence to her mantal aflairs and to Mr. Conkling, might be very satisfac tory if we could shut out from view the respective relations of the several parties if we - could forget, as she seems to have forgotten, that Mr. Sprague is1 her husband, while Mr. Conkling does not and cannot legally occupy that relation to her. It the positions were reversed, if Mr. Conk ling had been her husband and Mr. Sprague something less than a friend, then her talk would have seemed em inently adapted to the case. One remark of Mrs. Sprague's is calculated to elicit in her behalf a world of pity. She says: "For thir teen long years my life has been a constant burden and drag upon me." When it is remembered that within that time she has been three times made anew an apparently happy mother, the mysterious complications, not to say contradictious, of her case seem to grow inexplicable. It was one of the greatest American lawyers a native of Rhode Island, too- who said, many years ago, in one of the most eloquent orations ever delivered in that State: "He who en ters the dwelling of a friend, and, un der the guise of friendship and the shelter and protection of hospitality, corrupts the inteirritv of his wife or daughter, by the common consent of mankind ought to be consigned to an immediate jrallows." It is likely , that in his boyhood Gov.
