ger says: "We once rode up to a
farm house in this county to spend
the day. We found the farmer's
wife alone in the kitchen preparing
dinner. The farmer was at his tan
yard hard at work. The two sons
were in the field gathering corn and
running the farm. One daughter
was in the weaving room making
materials for family wear. The
other daughter cleaning up the
house, and then to the sewing.
There was no hiring upon the farm,
no man servant nor maid servant,
no boy or girl. The work of the

that the school committee board is
sole judge of its own membership.
This decision sustains the action of
the Boston school board in refusing
seats to women, and the latter must
go to the Legislature to obtain that

No appointment of Judge for the
Western District of Arkansas in
place of Story, resigned, will be
made till next winter. In the
meantime Judge Caldwell will, un
der the law, hold court in that dis
trict. General Sarbon will resign the
Marshalship of the Western Dis
trict and Gen. Pagin will be appoint
ed to succeed mm.
The public debt statement issued
1st July, shows a reduction during
the month of June of $2,180,196,
the currency balance is $14,586,010,
and coin balance $74,204,804; coin
certificates $22,825,100 ; special de
posits held for redemption of cer
tificates of deposit $58,760,000. The
Comptroller of Currency has called
for statements from National banks,
of their condition at close of busi-
ness on the 25th ult.
At Memphis, on the 30th ult.,
Chanceller Walker; in the case of
Venablev. the Paducah & Mem
phis. Railroad for damages, has de
cided that no such corporation as
Paducah& Memphis Kailroad is
known to the law. The authority
under which the charter was grant
ed having been unconstitutional.
