ALL ku-klnx prosecutions pending in South Carolina Federal Courts have been dismissed, and the President has pardoned the last remaining ku-klux. At the Bakers ville Democratic meet ing, Slitchell county declared for lion. David Schenck for Chief Justice, Maj. A. C. Avery for District Judge, and J. 31. Gudgex for Solicitor. Thi Hickory Prt$, noting thai Marion will try to put on the water brakes, the first Tbarsday in June, hopes prohibition will prevail, ano wishes it obtained- in all the townships of the State. The Norfolk Landmark gets off this, conundrum : Shall we burn our paws over Lonk ling's chestnuts ? This refers to the proposed Florida investigation. and the difficulty seems to be to detern'. ine which, if any, are Mr. Conkling's chestnuts, and which uncle Sammv Tildan's. We must have out the Demo cratic chestnuts, burn whose paws tbe effort may. Ashi County is much in tbe notion of Armfield for Congress, and the Piedmont Pre$s, as everybody knows, says : Col. A. is a man of thorough legal qualifications, executive ability, and reasoning powers, is a fluent and elo quent speaker, and pre-eminently qual ified to fill the exalted place to whicl the good people of Ashe seek to ele vate him. Do Cameron's chances for the suc cession to tbe Senate are forecasted rather dubiously from a Republicar standpoint in Pennsylvania- Betweet the Nationals, who will probably hol the balance of power, defection to Came roninhisown ranks, and the contin gency of Democratic control of th legislature, the prospects of the bride groom of Klan-Cameron are not the most nattering to an ambitious soul. In the Congressional campaign thif Fall, it is said the National Republican Committee has decided to set up sev eral Northern outrage mills, and blood; shirt scare-crows at the South, in tbr hope of carrying many of the district? for Southern loyalists. Old Martin I. Townsend, of New York, is a speci men kidney of the kind coming. Tht S mth welcomes all such and their cam p tign expenditures among an impover ished people. The Lenoir Topic calls loudly for more country schools, and notes that to townsh:ps in Caldwell have n schools whatever. The lopie says th fi-ee sch-jol system is so deficient that it has actually done more harm than good by causing the people to depend on and wait for schools under it, and he bids the people wait no longer, but talk tht matter over among themselves, and go to work and establish their own schools. A Correspondent at Henderson mentions Captain Jo. Townes as a probable candidate for Superior Conrr Clerk of Oraovile; that he will make an acceptable officer to both parties; and for the first ,ti me since the war thi Democratic ticket was triumphant iu the munioipal contest in that town. 1 has with perseverence and firmness" tht gallant Democracy of Granville u gradually overcoming the heavy Re publican majority thrust upon it by tht eufranchiseraent of the colored people, a ad hopes are entertained for a Demo t ratio Legislative ticket at tbe August t lection. RlfrtjrpR,-Preei the Wilmkitoh anVeon :Rilrd, furniahOff his 8pefclaT report tr;tbe stockholders, on receiving ttie roiad from its late lessee, the WitrnTfigtbn, Columbia and- Airgosta, whieb,- failing to pay the rental, surrendered the road and ite property on the 15th of April. The exhibit of the Treasurer shows that the company owns in good, paying property and available, assets f 3,445, 809.22; against a funded debt of$1,Rr9y 100 00, and a floating debt of onVyJ$3S, 7 1 3 09. The capital stock of the com pany is 14,563 shares, which, at par value of $100 eaeh, gives the sum of 1 1.456,2( 0 00. The net earnings, after payment of operating expenses and interest, have been used in payment of material and labor for improving the road and its property, to enable it to meet com peti tion and to retain its business at" com petitive points. The betterment bonds, EHven as a collateral for money ad vanced to purchase jails,. have been surrendered and cancelled. On the 1st of April there was $28,28304 in the treasury to the use of .the company. The 1st or July about $48,000.00 will be due for interest; the net earnings will pay, this and leave something for the purchase of new rails. A statement of the business of the road from October 1st, 1877, to April 1st, 1878, six months, shows the re ceipts from all sources to have been $307,503.72, of which $179,637.13 was from freights, and $99,233 90 from pas senger traffick. The operating expenses for the same period were $165,105.72, On this exhibit, the President notes that "there has been a further shrink age of business as compared with the previous year ; the Jess has been chiefly I 1 1 1 . on locai uusmess, uecause people raise more of their own supplies, and travel less." It is also stared that there ba been a reduction in local rates since 18C9, of about 36 per ceDt. At the last annual meeting, a com mittee of Ave stockholders, consisting jf Messrs. Fred. Phillips, of Tarboro, A. Branch, of Wilson, Wm. A. Wright, Donald McRae and Wm. II. McRary, ol Wilmington, was appointed to ex amine the road and its equipmetp, and to compare present rates with these ol former years. Their report appears to gether with that of tbe President, in which the condition and equipment of the road is stated to be highly satisfac tory. The report shows that since 1860, 14,977 tons of new! rail have been laid, of which 1,709 was steel rail; 43 steel -witches $4,515; 42 steel frogs $2,081.00 and six sttel switches and frogs at 8920, . IV). Improvement in buildings, shops, bridges, equipments, ballasting 130 miles of road-bed, tilling in trestles &c. is pat dowu at 265,&?0.10, of which 103.000 was for cine new locomo tives, and 8 17, 700 for new cars. 1 The President goes on to say: The property, during the lease, wai much improved in value, the details of which are giveu in the report of J. F. Divine, Superintendent, to the Committee. Sinca the 1st of January, 1872, an an nual average of 1,52-4 tons of new rail his been put in the track, more than double the quantity required had the track been in first-class condition at that time. The fact is noted that new rails will 09 requited ,tt an early day. The road bed, cross ties, ditches, rolling stock and roost of the track is in tirst-class condition. In the last annual report Superinten Ient Divine, a man of skill and experi--nce, estimated, from actual ceunt, twenty-nine miles of old rail, which has been in use about twenty-five years, and chat 1,500 tons of new rail will be requir ed to keep the track iu first-class con dition. About one-half' of the receipts are from competitive business, the success of which depends much on the condi tion of the track, especially in the pas senger business, suce the introduction of first-class ocean steamships to com pete for the travel to Florida and the Coast Cities. . It is for the Stockholders to deride the policy for the renewal of the track: Shall dividends be , entirely suspended until the same is put in first-class con dition for competitive business? or, small dividends be made aud the, time of repairs be extended over a longer period of time, with less, effi ciency of track f for service and with greater operating jexpenses ? The report concludes: If new rail was in tbe place of the old, the present year's business wpuld yield from 6 to 7 per cent, dividend) on the capital stock, notwitlistanding the decrease of re ceipts as compared witfi the preceding year. - ( Judicial Lonventlon. The nominatinir . convention - nF th Eighth Judicial Ejistrict meets at Hick- " i - "" " ory, on Wednesday the 29th inst. The contest for tbe Judgeship lies between gentlemen of the; Democratic party, as there is not the least intimation of a candidate from the Republican side. ind all tbe counties of the District com bined gave Gov. Vance a majority over settle of 5,637 votes. Among the law yers mentioned jrr connection with the nomination tbe convention cannot go amiss. Any one of them would make a good judge. The contest up to this time has been a Tnodel one, as far. as we can see. There j have been no public attempts at personal defamation.
