Ralxiou, January 2, 1804 Mr Dear fciR: The noal plunge which I have been dreadiog and avoid iur that is to separate me from a large number of my political friends, is about to b mils. It is now a axed policy of Ur. liuldea ana others to call a con vention in May to take North Carolina back to the United State, and the agi tation. h already begun. Holutious adiciiag in is course were prepared a few days aio ia the Standard office, and sout to Johnson county to be pass ed a: a public meeting next week; and a series of meetings are to be held all over the State. For any cause now existing, or likely t exist, I can never consent to this cou re . Never. But hnxrd it be inevitable, and I be anable to prevent ir, as I have no riht to suppose I could, believing that it would be ruinous alike to the Mate and the Confederacy, producing war and devastation at home, and that it would steep the name of North Car olina in infamy, and make her memory a teproach among the nations, it is my determination quietly to retire to the army and find a death which will en able my children tosiy that their fatr r waa not consenting to their degrada tion. This may sound a little wild and rotuantio to use no stronger expreas iou but it is for your eye only. I feel, nr. in rxLUiy respects, as a son toward you; and when the many acts of kind ness I have received at your hands are remembered, and the parental interest you have always manifested for my welfare, the feeling ia not unnatural. I th refore approach you ftaukly in this matter. I- wilL not preant tie arguments against the piopo-d procediu'. There is something to U said on bth sides. We are sadly pished t the wall by the enemy ou everv de. it is true. That cuui be answered by military men and a reftreuoH to history. Many peop'e hate been worw off, infinitely, and yet triumphed. Our finances and other ma . rial resources are not in worse condition than were those of our fath er in 1TS )-SI, th ugh repudiation is int.tab'e. Almost every argument ak.AUMt toe chaiices of onr succeas can uiTfre'iod but one; that is the cries f wo-neu and liltle children for bread! (f .I 1 othTv thu is the hardest for a m n of bumme sentiments to meet, c ideally btii the sufferers rejoin to vmr appeals t t'-.eir patriotism. '"Y u, G -eruor have pUnty; your children hv i.eTcr fe t want.' Mill, no great po.uiiai vr moral blessing ever h; s Icea or can be attained without sufTVr i ig. Mich is our moral c -ntitution, tba: hbeity aud indej-enclence can only W atLerrd of bld a d misery, sus taiu.d and fostered by devoted pal riot Urn acd heroic unnhood. This requires a deep hold on the popular heait; and htthfr our people are williug to pay tbip:icefor Southern independence. I am somewhat inclined to doul t. But, sir, in tracing the sad story of the back log down, the self 'imposed degradation of a great people, the hutnaD shall not !j itis due to the we i km . of theii H vernor, aad that S.-ul was con 5en'ing unto their death ! Neither do I Jc.-ue, for the sake of a sentiment, to i ti -ul others in a ruin which they misht avoid by following more ignoble coun.oel. As itod liveih, there is noth- I iu which I would not do or dare for the peopie who so far beyond my de serts have honored me. But in resist ing this attempt to lead them back, l:uiub.ed and degraded, to the arms of their enemies, who have slaughtered their ons. outraged their daughters, and watd their tild with fire, and lay thnbounl at the feet of a muster w ho promises th- m only life, provided they wi.l swear to uphold Irs adminis tration, and surrender to the hangmau those whom they themselves placed in the p.ition which constitutes their crime in resisting tbi. I say, I feel tnat I am serving them truly, worthi ly . Ia aroroachinz this, the crisis of NortH Carolina's fate, certainly of my own career. I could think of no oue to w hm I could more appropriately go for advice than yourself, for the reas ous before stated. If you can say any thing to throw light on my path, or en able me to avoid the rocks before me. I .hall be thankful. My great anxitty tow, as I can scarcely hope to avert the contemplated action of the State, is to prevent civil war. and to preserve life and property as far as may be pos sible. With due consideration on the prt of nublio men. which I fear is not to he looked for. this might be avoided. Itohallbemt aim. under God, at all events. Let the Legislature do what is expected of it. 1 Our cotemporary bit the nail fairly on tne ncaa. in routn wants mm in the Senate. It is upon this ground that ws have ventured to urge his claims and to advise our Carolina readers to support him to a man. We have no doubt he will be elected, and it will be a proud day for bis State and section wben his ringing voice is heard in the Senate of the United Statea, the doors of which were once barred against him by the fanatical enemies of bis section. kpeer's Wlie for rartle.
