"if f DAILY NEWS THURSDAY, - - JUNE 19, lfTP. UlUET JOBDAX, FRormirroiui JOIII B. Hl'MCY, Editor. "BOM"CU DLEKH SEW MAX. Henry W. Blair, the new Senator from Nw Hampshire, is porbaps tha most creditable choice that Mr. Wil liam K. Chandler couM Lave made. Judging from the biographs published io pprs o that Slate. Ho served iafbslato civil war mod ro to the rank olientenant colonel, and his civil ex prienc aa far as me can learn is summed up by single terms of service In both branches of the legislature and In Congr. Of course, he is Hepubli can In politic, and it may safely 1 as aamed that he Is of the "stalwart ' hade, or else Mr. Chandler mould no hart put him forward. He is also temperance reformer New Hamp shire linp openly anti-whiky and priraiely taking car of her quota of th beverage. He is prolably a man of more ability than his prdo.sor. Mr. Wadleigh. whi-h Is not saying a great deal. Tber are enough men In New Hampshire who. Ifsnttothe United States Senate, would materially ad vanre that State on the list for ability In the roll of pnbllc men: bnt if there la a "pocket borough"' In the United Htate New Hampshire can rightfully Ur claim to being one, and the chweM one at that. For the lat tsfltf years or more Mr. William K. Chandler h dominated that Wtate by methods known aa the t ameronUu" style. Honey, to be sure, baa not Iwen so opsnly circulated aa under the rule oi the great Pennsylvania statesman, but patronage has been freely prom ised, and. for a wonder, prom be of place and other "pick ings" have been generally kept. I'ersons without "mtlufnr "-u c, the command of votes have bad to bestir themselves to gain attention, and the old-Uiue partisan "incompetents' have been relegated to their origin! ob scurity. The press has been largely subsidized, and woe to the unfortunate editor who Oared to oppose the will ol the autorratic Chandler. It was of no um to undertake it; patronage was a CectoaJly cut off as If the J -a per had been established in Russia and Mr. Chandler waa the Czar. It was of little os to form an opposing combination, tae elements were too weak. And hence we have the curious spectacle of a country weekly newspaper issuing mandates to the faithful, threatening the vacillating and, more than all else, making nominations for the uiot im portant ofTWs of the State, and l-eing strictly obeyed in every instance, and that, too. without any evidences of edi torial ability such as are generally seen in the leading papers of other States. Not a line of the State printing can be obtained except by the chen ones. Not a newpaper proprietor can get a cent oat of the political fund unless he baa truckled to the committee, which is virtually Mr. Chandler; but on the other hand those who have tooted the trump of fame for that genilemau have pr pered beyond all measure. Not another State in the Union w ould have submitted to such insolence, or wherever it has been tried, although suorewsful for a short time. ct.inMua- tions have ben formed, as io Pennsyl vania, which have met lh- arrogant claims and corupelled the iolitUal au tocrats to retire. New Ham-hire stands foreiuot and alone in the lil ol subserviency to a one-man power, and aa long as she remains In this ition her ablest men will remain at home. Rays the Bridgeport Farmer, the Republican orgins are coming to the conclusion that the present Democratic programme of a-tion on the appropriation bills is not a "back-down ' at all, but rather an advance along the w hole line that "means business" of a most decided character. They begin to see that by the new nlicy the Iiemocrats are not only likely to ptin free elections for a year, but leave the question open for further disastrous exposure of the Re publican policy, and they are cor.se ijuenl'v inclined to regret that they did not allow Hayes to approve the bills as originally passed and thus end the damaging agitation. The Repub lican HsIt ion Is certainly a hard and discouraging one. No wonder they are splitting into factions over it ! Tiik Tribune, apparently, thinks the Republicans have gone a little too far in ihcir opposition to the army bill. It now says that the President's "own de claration that the l:iw dio not permit "him, nor has he any deire, to use the Army 'as a olice force to keep the "feac at the polls, commita him to "lgn the bill. There is practically no "necessity for a strong demonstration "in the Senate against the bill, and it "may I worth considering whether "the admirably consistent record of the "party, from the President downward, "in all this business, would not k lit tle disrigiiredbv such a course." Tin: Hartford Courant (Radical a pvrliaving asserted thaf the Republi cans of Wisconsin had ordered one hundred thousand copies of Senator R. H. And the Courant ignored the proposition; w herupon a gentleman of Windsor of fered to add fifty dollars to the Times' hundred. Rut the Courant still de clines. Whatkvkr i done, the utmost care should betaken to make a re-ord which cannot b construed, even by Demo cratic misrepresentations, to favor the use of troops at the polls.- .V. )'. Tri bune. Talbott's new Patent Spark Arrester is really the only perfect and leliable one, and is superseding all others in use. The pretit eniciency of this Arrest er is attracting universal attention, and is being endorsed by the best mechan ical engineers and insurance companies. Its prominent features are It does not destroy the draft. It does not interfere with cleaning the tubes. It will .o. ...uk6 up, and requires no cleaning. It requires no direct dampers to be opened when raising steam (dampers being objectionable, aa they may be left ojeii anil allow sparks to escape.) It requires no water to extinguish sparks, which, by condensation, de stroys the draft. Besides, when water is used, if neglected, the efficiency is destroyed by evaporation of the water, and the boiler is kept in a filthy con dition. It is simple and durable, and can be relied ujon. It can be attached to any boiler. No planter should be without one ol them. Insurance companies will in sure gins and barns where the Talbott Engine and Spark Arresters are used at same rate as charged for water or horse-power. j:-ir Send for illustrated circulars and price list.
