On Saturday morning last information was brought to town that Weylahd Prich: ard, colored, husband of the notorious Eliza Pkikston, bad died suddenly, and under very peculiar circumstances, that morn.ng. .huza ricks ton was in town herself, and a reporter of this paper inter viewed he. bbe stated that she aud Prichard had bad a difficulty some two weeks since, and that he bad left her and gone to reside with his mother near Cal houn ; that the difficulty was concerning their cbild, an infant seven months ot age. un a nday last, she said, she went to Calhoun to see Weylandr and they quarreled ; that Weyland attended a fes tival that night, and on baturday morning came over to see her, and, taking his child in his arms, began caressing it, and ' ATTEMPTED TO KISS HER, but she turned away from bim, remarking that she did not want any nigger to kiss her. She told this reporter that she meant this in play, and was astonished to see Weyland shuddering and reeling back into a chair, and fall to the floor. Upon exami nation he was found to be dead. Coroner Jones summoned a jury about noon and went to Calhoun, taking Dr. Craxton with him. An inquest was held. No signs of violence were found upon the body. The head was opened and the , brain found to be in a healthy condition. The body was then opened and .the heart examined, which also showed freedom from disease. The stomach was taken out, and although much congested, exhibited no evidence of poison. Several witnesses were examined and owing to the cor flat in their several statements, and at the suggestion of the jury, Eliza was TUKNKD OVEB TO THE CFFIOEES of the law to await further investigation in the matter. On Monday the jury con vened in Canton, and, after hearing fur ther testimony, returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death from some un known cause. The testimony against Eliza beincf altogether circumstantial, and vague at that, she was released. Wey land's mother says that Eliza remarked in her preeence when it was known that he was dead, "Well, I've got you at last." El'za is a weak, simple creature, with in stinct little, if any, above the brute crea tion, and has a temper like a tiger's. The case is to be further investigated, and many are of the opinion that it will yet be developed that foul means were employed to procure the death of the deceased,' and thai Eliza, if not the principal, is at least a party to the murder. One of the Causes of Habd Times in Europe. No wonder Europe is suffering from hard times. The, army of each country is a burden that would almost bankrupt a continent. Russia1 has a mili tary force of 3,046,800 men, 600,000 be longing to the reserve and 2.446,800 to the standing army. France has a regular army of .1)089, 000 men, which, with the territorial army of -1,208.000, makes a total of 2.897,000. In 1892 this will be increased by 300,000 reserve men. - The German army consists of 2,004,300 men. In 1892 the total strength of Italy will be 2,021200 men. Austro-Hungary possesses 1 194,318 soldiers. The armies of Europe make a total of over 16,000,000 who are learning the art of war, and who can be called on at any moment by the great powers. With such an "old man of the sea" as this on its shoulders how can Europe expect prosperity ? m si Chapel Hill Ledger: Gen. Hke, we learn, has .subscribed $5,000 to the Uni versity Railroad in behalf of the Iron Mine Company Little Blanche Martin some time since . swallowed a needle. It was not known at the time that she had swal lowed it. May I not ask you also to inform me of the result of that contest, If you know It f I have the honor to be. Yours truly, R. A. BYNUM. In 1874 I presented a gentleman In London with a gallon of your make and he said it ex celled anything he had ever seen made from rult, and that all his acquaintance who had uted it thought it equal V the best brands ot grape brandy.
