The matter occasioned a breezy colloquy on the matter of free passes Senator Starbuck charged that Senators had passes in their pockets to and from Newbern, and he regarded it a-* outrageous for Populists ana Repub licans to accept passes over the railroads for doing which Democrats had been blamed. . Solom n P-ml ex pres ident of the University, #2,400 interest due him aud f<*r cash ad vane d by him to the University during the insolvency of that institution in the reconstruction period, was called up. Senator Abell explained the bill and star*d that the claim of Dr. Pool was a juri one and ought to be allowed. Sen ator Forties cou ended that it was ouly a matter of justice that the claim be al lowed. Senator Lindsay opposed the bill on the ground that siradar claims had not been allowed lie said he was informed that it was not a fact that Dr. Pool had advanced money toth** Un»v -r sity, and that Dr Pool had come to Ral eigh while president of the University and gotten money due the UnDer.-ity, all of which ho kept, claiming it to be due him on salary. lie thought it unjust to allow this claim unless the claims of other professors were allowed. Senator Moody, of Hayw >od, said th*» matter had been thoroughly investigated, that it was a just claim and ought to tie allowed Senamr Sigin >n entertained the same opinion. Senator Cook said he was a member of the Legislature tha l passed the bill allowing Dr. Pool #4,000 s >rae years ago. He was satisfied that interest was intended to be added, but was omit ted by misiake. He thought the claim a just oue which the State ought top*y. Seuator Mewborne spoke in fav -r of the bil*.
