M'MACKIN’S SCALPi Eight PopuUl amt dates For His Place. WILL WORK FOR LESS RAY’S COMBINATION SCHEME FINDS FAVOR. | judge wni raken’s son a Candidate Then There Are Several wane County Farmers Who Want to Move hto Towriahip and Spend its Ruid Money. The County Commissioners were In session all day yesterday, and will meet this morning at 10 o’clock. To-day’s session will be one of special interest. Several elections are to be held. Mr. J. C. 1,. Harris will be re elected county attorney without oppo sition. Mr. C. H. Ray will also have an easy thing of getting his place of superintendent of the County Home again. But Mr. \V. C. McMackiu, the excellent supervisor of the public roads of the Raleigh road district wi!' prob ably be defeated. Certainly he will not he re-elected if the board decides that they can get along without him. The plan is to give C. B. Ray, Popu list. the keeper of the County Home and Workhouse, the supervision of this road district and then let him hnv a man. If the board can find authority it will do this, or else it will oust McMackiu and put in a cheap man at S4O or s.~>o a mouth. McMackiu gets .SIOO a month, and he has thus far been worth it. There are, besides Kay, no less than seven candidates for his place—all Pop ulists—as follows: Debenier, Whita ker. son of Judge Spier Whitaker: K. J. Btiffaloe, of Milburnie; It. J. Smith, of Panther Branch; E. G. Penny, of Barton’s Creek; J. J. Penny, of Oak Grove; W. H. J. Goodwin, of Swift Creek; Lonnie M. Green, of Wake For est. All of these. 7 am told, are willing to work for much less than Mr. McMackin is now getting. What difference does it make whether or not the work is well done, just so a Democrat does not draw the salary? •> But just here It misrht be pertinent to inquire «’ ether or not it would not be well to consult the wishes of the peo ple of Raleigh township in this matter. They pay .‘ill the money that is to be spent by this supervisor. The people in Raleigh alone pay nine-tenths of the tax. They ought to have something to say as to how or by whom it is to be spent. Certainly the Commissioners have no right to go out of the district to get a man to spend it. when one so eminetiy ‘ qualified for the work, so experienced in it ns Mr. McMackin can Is- f nuid right here among the people who pay the tax. But. then, you know, pie-hunters must have place*—he they competent or incompetent. The bonds of the county office-s are also to be examined to-day and renewed I if the board should consider it ueces sary. The larceny of dogs continues. Own-j ers of good bird dogs find it almost im possible to keep them. Somebody is fix* ng to break in. the penitentiary, and that will likely wind up the business. That was a surprise to the member ship of the Second Baptist church Sun day morning, when Rev. Geo. J. Dowell tendered his resignation. It came like a clap of thunder from a clear sky. He ;e a good preacher, zealous in every good word and work, and has greatly en deared hintself to the church. Under his wise ministrations sixty new mem bers have been added to the church roll during the past year, and the work has gone forward iu all the various departments. Mr. Dowell "has done uj good work for the pubuic schools of the county. He is superintendent of pub lic schools for Durham county, and has been faithful and efficient in that field. Mr. Dowell tells me that there has been some little friction for some time growing out of the way he voted iu ISD4. He has received a call from the Baptist church in Lumberton and expects to accept the call. Durham will give this gentleman up very reluc tantly. and it is hoped he may yet be induced to reconsider.
