2 MR, SIMMONS AND THE SENATORSHIP Selection Ought to Wait Till Amendment is Ratified. OPPOSES ANY SCRAMBLE THINKS PERSONAL AMBITION SHOULD UK SUBORDINATED. WOULD ESTEEM ELECTION AN HONOR Appreciates the Suggestion of His Name and Would be Profoundly Grateful if Elected to That High Position. The following Jotter from lion. F. M. Simmons, chairman of the State Demo cratic State Executive Committee, ap peared in the Saturday afternoon edition of the Asheville Citizen: Editor The Citizen: I am in receipt of your esteemed favor of the Oth inst., inquiring whther I will he ai candidate for the U. S. Senate, and declaring your self friendly to my election if 1 should be a candidate. * Immediately after the election of TBOS many similar expressions in my behalf came to me, and ever since have con tinued to come to me from friends from different parts of the State. That any considerable part of my fellow-eitizehs should think me worthy of so high and exalted a position, ami should consider that my services to the party and the State deserves such recognition by the people is to me a source of very great satisfaction, and I am unable to ex press in words my profound apprecia tion. I regard the position dn question worthy of any man’s ambition, and if 1 should say I did not desire it 1 would not apeak the truth. But there is now pending before the people >;i question which overshadows the question of who shall fill this office, or any office, and all offices, upon which depends in a very large degree, the future peace and prosperity of the State; and until that question is settled, there’should bo no dividing or distracting scramble over this office. To the success of this great and beneficent measure I shall devote all of such time as I can spare from what is to me the necessary work of making a living, and leave the people to make their own selection of a, Sena tor ‘and in such manner as they may think wise and proper. If the selection falls upon me I shall esteem it an ex ceedingly great honor, and shall lie, as any man should be, profoundly grate ful. I am, I beg you to believe, sincerely grateful to you for tfbe interest you W. H. Kmc & CCS DM STUBS. Corner Fayetteville and Hargett Streets | Corner Wilmington and Martin Streets. RALEIGH.
