The newly elected city clerk, Mr. W. W. Willson, will take charge on the first of next month. The mail l\)xes about the city are ail to be repainted in a few days. A new card telling of the hour of collecting the mail wifi be placed on them. On Wednesday afternoon the members of the Capital Club will enjoy a barbecue and brunswick stew, invitations to the members having been Issued by Mr. W. H. Broughton. Commissioner of Agriculture F. L. Patterson, who spent Sunday in Salem with Mrs. Patterson, was here yesterday on his way to Elizabeth Citv to attend a meeting of farmers. A new and improved set of books for the State Treasurer’s office, just ar ranged by Captain Moody, of the depart ment have been received and will be put in use at an early date. A letter received from Mr. William S. Worrell, who is now on the transport Sheridan, which travels between San Francico and Manila, says that in a few months he will receive his card as chief engineer. This is gratifying to his friends. f Mr. Hasten Poe, agent of the Southern Express Company here, who has been vis iting various portions of the State, has returned. His health is much improved and with thirteen pounds more weight expects to resume his duties in about two weeks. ' Among the attorneys in attendance on the Supreme Court, which is hearing ap peals from the Fourteenth District this Avesk are Judge A- C. Avery, ot Morganton; Messrs. Locke Craig. A. S. Barnard and R. S. McCall, of Asheville, and W. Zachary, of Marshall. The bull snake, lately captured- under the stand used by an “Eat ’Em Alive 1 ’ showmen during Fair week on Fayette ville street, is still alive, and Curator Brimley has him as a pet in a room at the museum. Mclver, of Sanford, arrived in the city yesterday and is here on legal business. Insurance Commissioner James R. Young went to Henderson yesterday morning on business. Messrs. D. F. Wooten, J. L. Murphey and J. C. Heath, of Kinston, are in the city at the Yarborough. Mr. R. N. Hackett, of Wilkesboro, has returned to the city, after a visit to the eastern part of the State. Mr. A. M. Burns, who has been vis iting relatives here and in Pittsboro, left his home in Roxboro yesterday. Hon. Lee S. Overman, of Salisbury, who has been spending some days in the city, left for his home yesterday. Mr. Charles B. Gay, of Savannah. Ga., the secretary and treasurer of the Savan nah, Svrup Co., was here Sundav as the guest of his brother, Mr. W. B. Gay. Rev. Jno. C. Kilgo, of Trinity College, was here yesterday on his way homp from Monroe, where he attended the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference. RICE BY IRRIGATION. J. V. Williams, of New York, is in the city and stopping - at the Yarborough. He is promoting a stock company for a rice farm by irrigation. The farm consists of 3.000 acres, now in cultivation. He is selling the stock at 30 per cent, paid up. and says that the stock will certainly nay 10 per cent the first year, thus making 33 1-3 per cent on investment. He has just returned from Louisiana and Texas where he has thoroughly in vestigated raising rice by irrigation, and says it is the biggest thing in the country just now.
