NEW YORK COTTON.
New York, Dec. 9. —The cotton market
opened steady at an advance of 1 to ft
points, or at the best ligures of the ses
sion, on better cables than looked for with
the Liverpool market showing a net rise
of CV. to 1 points. For a time there was
a fair degree of public interest and dur
ing the early forenoon the market held
steady on this and covering when public
interest subsided and the local tradei *
attacked the market. Under the latter
selling prices worked off 6 to S points,
after which there was a partial rally
siarled by the smallness of the interior
movement, the semi-weekly figures show
ing receipts of C 5,339. against 124,993 for
the corresponding period last, year and
only half what they have averaged for n
period of five years. Port receipts were
also disappointing, being 42,731 bales,
against 74.869 bales last year. On this
showing the “in sight” figures for the
week were calculated r.t about 400,000
Tales, against -12.',4.78 last year and 459.-
032 for the year 1900. The selling for
short account was almost entirely upon
the assumption that a scarcity of cars
and bad weather accounted for the small
ness of the movement. New Orleans was
a pretty good buyer in ibe local market
today with the spot markets of the South
sustained *o l-16e higher. Total sales
futures, estimated. 30.606 bales. The mar
ket was steady and net unchanged to 2
point 3 lower.

on the thoor>’ that light receipts would
run in some shorts was sold this morn

later. There was nothing in the way
of news to stimulate the market and
ibe market was not stimulated. One
weakening factor was the selling of Jan
uary. This option failed to advance with
May aed March early, but broke sharply
later. There seemed to be a general dis
position on the part of January holders
to liquidate. There, will be a large quan
tity of cotton tendered <0 holders of
January, and holders don’t seem as anx
ious to take the cotton as they advertised
early in the season. While receipts were
small this seemed to have no influence
on the various crop estimates, and as long
as this continues, no active speculation
in cotton is looked for. Then too. ihe
silver question is having a depressing
effect on business with the East. It may
be that instead of a consumption of cot
ton larger, the total may prove smaller
than last year. If the trouble with sil
ver lasts, this is more than probable.
With a prospect of more cotton and the
possibility of less demand, there can
hardly be much of a bull market at the
moment. For this reason we say, lake
advantage of every advance in cotton to
sell. When weather improves and the
crop moves more freely, the market is
not likely to be at But. sell only
on bulges.

Cotton Letter.
(Special to News and Observer.)
New York, Dec. !>. —In response to the:
advance in Liverpool our market opened
from 3 to 5 points higher, but imme
diately following the call there was a
flood of selling orders from all parts
of thq country, presumably liquidation by
scattered holders, which caused an easier
feeling and carried prices down 6 to 8
poiuts from the opening level.
In view of the small business in cot
ton contracts since the government’s re
port and the heavy selling to liquidate
hist month, it is evident that the in
terest in the market is about the smallest
that lias been known for a long time
and after today’s heavy sep.ttore-d liqui
dation it is probable that there is very
little speculative long cotton in the mar
ket, except for the Wall Street bull pool,
and as spot cotton houses were buy rs
of the neat’ months today, it would seem
that the pool will be able to carry their
point in the January position.
Receipts are extremely light, tlie ports
losing 30,000 bales today as compared
v.ith last year while the interior move
ment was in the same proportions. We
think very favorably of cotton at pres
ent prices.

(Special to News and Observer.)
New Orleans. La., Dec. 9.—Liverpool j
advices were favorable, but our mar- j
kot only opened 2 points higher and ad- i
vanced 1 additional shortly after on the .
light Houston estimate. Subsequently a {
selling wave to realize set in on the j
heavier New Orleans estimate than ck- i
ported and the lack of outside buying, j
causing a decline of 7 points from the j
top. Near the close values steadied 1
slightly, making tho net loss 2 to 3 points j
on the day. The continuance of bad
weather, generally in Texas, liar, re
stricted tlie movement, from that State,
and the car shortage east of the Missis
sippi River has been instrumental in cur
tailing receipts from that section. Cables
from Liverpool today state Manchester is
influenced unfavorably by tlie decline in
silver and as spinners have bought so
freely lately it is thought they will
now fall back on their stock and take
1 less than their consumption. The Very
light interior receipts are indicative of
a small weekly amount being brought into
sight this week. The fact that these are
less tban half of last year and year be
fore last demonstrates fully that they
are abnormal. Sentiment is, however,
very bullish, and although the movement
is taken to he impeded, still the chances j
are values may he sustained providing#
anv encouragement is given by spinners, j
