The Raleigh Methodist preachers, who
went to the Methodist Conference at
Wilmington, have returned.
A great crowd is expected to go from
Raleigh on next Sunday to the closing
of the Baptist State Convention.
Mr. R. M. Stockard, who died in Dur
ham on Monday, was a brother of Prof.
Henry Jerome Stockard, of this city.
A letter from Wilmington states that
the death of Rev. W. C. Norman was
caused by angina pectoris, or rheumatism
of the heart.
Mr. S. L. Rogers, of the Corporation
Commission, returned to the city from
High Point yesterday, where he had been
on railway business before the commis
sion.
Cadet C. C. Harrell, of Hertford, a
student of the A. and M. College, who
was taken to Baltimore for an operation
for appendicitis, is reported as doing
well.
The friends of Rev. T. N. Ivey, Rev.
,T. E. Hurley and Rev. J. W. Jenkins
are highly gratified that they have been
returned to their respective positions
there by the Methodist Conference.

Favors Prohibiting Stills Outside of Incorpor
ated Towns
A special to the Asheville Citizen
says:
Ex-President O’Donnell, es the State
Liquor Dealers Association, says he fa
vors Senator Simmons’ plan to prohibit
the location of liquor distilleries outside
of cities or incorporated towns.
“The scheme was originated by one of
the leading editors in the State several
weeks ago
•‘O’Donnell favors a high license of the
saloon in some counties where there is
no county tax on saloons. He thinks it
is even more necessary to have distil
lers under police regulations then sa
loons. The officer of the association fa
vors the S3OO Statd license on saloons, in
counties and cities which do not impose
more tax than the State does. The present
revenue to the State is $7,000. His plan
will yield SIO,OOO.

Kiss Merritt Injured
A special from New York gives the
particulars of an injury sustained by
Miss Annie Lee Merritt., daughter of
Trof. A. 11. Merritt, formerly of Chatham
county, now of Mt. Airy. It. says:
“Anna Lee Merritt, 35 years old, whose
residence is not known to the police,
was the victim of a peculiar accident
today. She was taken to the Presby
terian Hospital with severe concussions
of the head and body. Near Lexington
avenue, in East Fifty-ninth street, con
tractors are excavating for a new build
ing, and have reached a depth of 25 feet.
In place of the sidewalk along the ex
cavation a temporary bridge has been
constructed, on either side of which there
are railings. The railings are about
three feet high and midway between the
top and walk there is lateral piece of
wood. At the bottom of this excavation
she was found
