Total rainfall -0 inches. IN AND ABOUT THE CITY. Elder James Woodard, of Wilson will preach at the Primitive Baptist church this morning at eleven o’clock and Sun day morning at eleven o'clock. He Is the guest of Mrs. C. B. Aycock. . ’Squire Heiflin had before him yester day four boys, Willie Page, Jim Carring ton, Arthur Page and Caswell Chavis for violating the bird law, which prevents one from hunting on another's land with out permission. They paid the damage and cost and judgment was suspended. Yesterday morning while a carriage driver was on his way to the station he ran into one of the wires of the electric light and it came very near knocking him from his scat. The man who puts in the new carl>on every morning had the light down and the driver did not receive any shock as no danger is connected with the wires when down. Senor Octavio A. Acevedo, of Porto Rico, will enter the A. and M. College to learn Road Building and Topographical Surveying. The c has excellent practical courses in thi.se subjects. Th< Genor is said to be a wealthy coffee planter's son. The college is extending its fame quite rapidly. Recently an ap plication was received from the Philip pines, and a few years ago it had a Japanese student. Mr. A- W. Shroyer left this morning for Richmond, his old home. Mr. Shroyer has been living in Raleigh for the past four years, where he has put most of the granolithic pavements we now have on our walks. The pavement around the eapitol was done by him and also put ting in the basement at the insane asy lum. which was the largest contract he secured while here. He is an expert at his business and many of our beautiful walks are the wor'k of his art. PERSONALS. Mr. W. R. Eatman loft yesterday for Durham on a visit. Mr. W. L. Rankins, of Salisbury, spent yesterday in the city. Mrs. J. R. Price, of Albemarle, wife of Stanly county’s popular member of the House, is in the city the guest of Mrs. F. B- Arendell, on Fayetteville street. Mr- C. F. Lumsden, chairman of the executive committee of the Odd Fellows’ Orphanage, left yesterday for Goldsboro tomake a general inspection of the sew erage and water works of the orphanage. » Judges for W. F, C. Debate. Gov. Aycock and Dr. B- F. Dixon re ceived a very unexpected telephone mes sage yesterday from Wake Forest, ask ing them if they could act as judges in the college debate yesterday. They ac cepted and left on the morning train. This paper was in error in stating yes terday that the decision was rendered by a vote of those present and had not been informed of the change being made which was the custom. A Native of Michigan. The new postmaster at Charlotte, Mr. P W. Smith ,is a native of Michigan, and has resided in Charlotte' twelve years. He has always been a Republican. His selection was a surprise, but as the whole thing was turned over to Hiss, nobodv else has anything to do with it. Chamber of Commerce It R . Committee President F. T. This mine is situated in Silver Iliil i Township, about thirteen miles cast of Lexington, and is a highly valuable prop erty. A ten-stamp mill and concentra tor is being installed, which will in crease the output of the mine about ten tonsof ore per day. The pump will bo driven by a 40-horse power engine. Mr. W. J. Brent, one of the lessees of the mine, and who is also the manager, was in town this week in the interest of tin mine.
