Total expenditures for edu cation now approximate isoo.oot.eoe a year, the result being a rapid In crease In general Intelligence and a marked decrease In Illiteracy. X DURHAM SHORT ON MONEY. However, Bond Issue Floatrd Without Higher Tax Rate. tBserial ut Th. St. ana Mj.ii im I Durham. Nov. 11. A forecast of the tax money available for the va rious departments of the city for the coming year indicate that there will be leas money for general purposes than there has been during the past year.. The snnrtage in the general expense fund come about In spite of the ract that there will be about $11,000 more In taxes this year than there wae last year. The shortage la the result of an In crease of expenses In other depart ments of the city government, mainly In the addition of another bond issue. amounting to $40,000 Issued for the purpose of building a sewer plant and line south of Durham. This bond Issue was floated without aa Increase In the tax rate. Thla shortage means that the alder men will not be able to do aa much street work during HIS as they did In 1114. unless there are other pro visions made for this street work, far the money for new construction has to opme out of the general fund- In all probability thla will mean that the city will have to Issue bonds for streets.
