125 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH
CAROLINA STUDENTS AT
PLATTSBURG CAMP
(Special to the Kwt aod'Obienrer.)
' rhtpl HiH. Ane. 11. One hundred
tnd twenty-five Unirersity of North
Carolina etodenti are now in attend
ance at the Plattsburt Camp, New York,
aixty additional men having been al
lotted and appointed under the enlarge?
ment authoriaed ty the War Depart
ment. Theie men will enjoy a sixty
day period of training; returning to the
University thii fall with a knowledge
of military tactics that will make them
of great asaiiitance in developing an ef
ficient battalion of student soldiers.
Report! from Pldttgburg indicate that
, they ere enjoying th'r eamp experi
ences in the fullest measure in spite of
the(r. Uboris duties. Called from
their cots at S a. m. they continue their
round of duties, including' drills, lec
tures, hikes, setting- np exercises, etc,
until 9 o'clock at niglit. Little time is
given for idle pleasure the men say.
Thirteen hundred and fifty alumni
and students, 'whose addresses art
known, have gone into the service, ac
cording to figures correetrd tin to date
by the Registrar, Dr. T. J. Wilson, Jr.
The number In the various - branches
whose addresses the registrar has been
nnable to ascertain would undoubtedly
rary the total beyond the 1,800 mark,
University officials feel.
The University's quota includes i 2
brigadier generals; 9 colonels; 9 lien-tenant-colonels;
20 majors; 84 captains;
249 first lieutenants; 315 second lieu
tenants; 8 ehaplnins; 4 lieutenant com
manders (navy) ; 11 paymasters
(navy); 7. lieutenants (navy); 13 en
signs (navy); 67 in aviation; 510 non
commissioned officers; and others.
Lieutenant-Colonel G. W. 8. Stevens,
U. 8. A., detailed by the War Depart
ment as director of military tactics at
the University this year, the University
heing designated' as a Reserve Officers
Training Corps, is now busily engaged
in mspping out plans for the B. O. T. C.
this fall.
Colonel Stevens is very enthusiastlt
aver the outlook. With every indica
tion that the Freshman Class will be as
large if not larger than last year's, in
spite of the prevailing unsettled condi
tions, the colonel expects to develop a
battalion worthy of the highest com
mendation. . Captain J- fitnart Allen, a veteran of
two years experience in the thick of the
. fight oa the western, front and director
of military tactics at the University
daring the past year, will be back this
yU to assist in the training.
Adjutant J. V. Whitfield will again be
ft member of the military faculty.
' A student in the Reserve Officers
Training Corps at the University -will
be member of "the U. S. Army, but
will be en a furlough status. Uniforms
and equipment 'trill be provided by the
WarDepartment. The student will un
dergo regular military training, ap
proximately 10 hours week, as a part
of his ooureo during the college' year
and will attend a six-weeks camp for
rigid and intensive military training
. with nrivates psv dnrinar the summer. I
The policy1 of the government will be
to keep the members of the training
corps in college nntil the draft age is
reached, at least, and the War Depart
ment will have the power to order rach
men to continue in college after their
draft age la reached upon the recom
mendation of the president of the in
stitution and ths commandant in
charge, thus automatically placing
them in, class T, the recommendation

Thus, each student will be permitted

the intense heat that hes held Wilming

driving hundreds to the beaches and
sounds nearby. John Johnson died a

his front porch in SlacRae alley snd
Sophie McXeal died a few minutes later

Letters That Inspire
Confidence
I wish very much that every reader
of : this " paper - could spend - suf
ficient time . in my office to read the
thousands of letters which I have re
eeived from all parts of the country. 1
have printed several hundreds of them
in a booklet, but I wish you could see
the originals, for I would like to have
you realize the wonderful results which
they report in the relief of dyspepsia,
indigestion, persistent headache, rheu
matism, gall stones, kidney, bladder and
liver diseases, urie acid poisoning and
other conditions due to impure blood.
Before my own health was restored
by tihlvar Mineral Water and I pur'
ehased this Spring, and before I re
eeived all these letters from sufferers, I
dldat take very much stock in adrer
tisements like this. I therefore cannot
blame yon if you doubt, but, my friend,
I am absolutely cos r I need that the 8hi
var Spring is the greatest restorative
mineral spring ever discovered, not ex
eepting the famous Bpus of "Knrope. 1
have shipped this water to thousands
of sufferers in all parts of the United
States, and they almost invariably re
port either permanent restoration - or
beneficial result. That is why I make
the guarantee offer contained in ths fol
towing letter. Bign it now and mail it.
