THE NEWS AND OBSERVER. SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 23, 19111. 10 between- Vou By KATE BREW VAUGHN . AH popl view the season' hopping U a different way. 60ms get the keen est enjoyment life bold out of the hop ping tour, and not until every hop ha been visited and every possible garment ' ha beea tried on is the ultimate , pur :haae mule Thi shopper has the advantage of being able to "appraise" the clothing of all her associates, ss h.r Intimate knowledge of price and garments hat made the costume familiar to her. The least that ran be aid of thi woman i to pity her that life hold no more substantial employment or ao more hu man intereet for her. 8he i freqrently the "well-groomed woman" of which we hear ao much and often the is the "over-dressed one, while gin- ho i th properly dressed woman whose ap pearance we admit is faultiest, but whnse personality i faulty. There ia another woman to whom elothea are a bore, who object to shop ping, feel alway that the nien-hapt j getting the Jiest of it, that the sales lady ia condcKcending, and who usually buy the garment in desperation anil either ultimately hate them or grow to like them better and better a time e-oc on. This woman put her clothe on in the ame hurrird manner in wlm-U ah buy them and alway lack that "omething" which should make her rharminc. Between the two extreme there i that normal woman, who look about her for the etyle and little by little, a h doe other tliinirn, decide which of the fmwg'mir-miHV'Wlt only herself, but the variou member of her family. 8he alio decide the approximate price to pay for thee gar- Dirnt and while today there is no fixed price to anything, approximating the b!m of a, garment is going to be help ful to the salealnfly in waTfThg'"up6h yon and eliminate the necesaity of show- ing everything in the tore before an idea of the price ia suggested. To thi woman clothes are a real pleasure, not became ahe live for-them, but lika the pleasure she receives from the reading of a book or the aelectioj of a picture, the elothing ia to become part of her aelf ; to be the expression of herself, if you like. She doea not fall in love with i clothes, for instaucc, when stries look well on one person and the frequent ' occurrence of stripe in liops and on . people indicato. that stripe, are ''good v form." The normal woman, who is 'inclined to be fat and short, may find in the atylo an excellent avenue for making the most of her figure, whoreas ' the normal tall thin woman ahould, 'v thi time, have learned to let the atripes alone, but have theyf They have not. . Has the' fnt woman learned to let the big flowered and large patterned ma- - terial alone, but have theyf They havtr . r frt nomnji learned to let lh big flowered, and large patterned l.,:.. i. ra.inief Nlio has not. Ho, that ,' it sec in necessary to continually re mind women that what is good form , for one type la dangerously conspicuous for another tyie. It make;, good deal . of difference the way one gje ahmit shopping. Merchant pay, today pretty good salaries to salesladies not simply -' In sell cloth tug nlmost anyone can do . that hut to tissist their customers to the best selection. Tbo merchant if today waut a customer who return to hi store whenever it is possible to ' buy his line of goods. The merchant and the customer are both at the mercy of the saleslady. The merchant know ' it, and when hi saleslady is not doing . her duty by him mind you, this has little to do with the actual amount she . tells, but rather the good will she create " and the customers ske makes for the bounce-lie, lets her go and gets another In her place. If the customer conies . In with her mind all made up and want nothing of the saleslady but service In (bowing onu garment after the other. " the ia going to get that and that i all - but with her mind partly made up on tome points, aa to th price she can - afford, the color ahe would prefer and the line and cut, which she baa found in the past to be most suitable to her, and then leave some of the selection to the aaleslsdy, the .chance are that ahe , will get the beat the store contain for . the money expended. , Every woman look better in certain . colon than others and so it would be , ridiculous to buy and wear the trying , one. To the young girl with decided - coloring and whose hair harmonises with brown Tr green theae are two decidedly ' good colors, but to th good-looking woman with graying hair and com- plexion beginning to show wear, brown .. ia a trying color, bringing out the lack- ing qualities to an exaggerated degree; to th girl with pretty feature and ' sallow complexion green I a complete ' failure. Blue ia a safe color unless the November 25 th 10:30 A. M. Next Tuesday we will sell six hundred acres fine tobacco and grain land in Person County at your price and on easy terms. J. M. complicated "sTUdes are selected aad those who like brows aad find that the thiage t lr or-complMloa-asak it nrnhihitiv will be consoled with the bine. 80, also the woman of dark hair and aii now complexion, who usea to ioos well in green, and ia disappointed to find that it i no longer becoming, will find the old substantial blue a safe friend. I kaew a womaa to whom brown had once been a great ally, but who found after buying her winter suit of the most expensive material that it made brr look old aad tired, even when she did not feel that way. I found that the additioa of a white lace collar made the whole thing worse, for somehow the wrinkle were slittle more accentuated, aud 1 was gad a week later to aee thi aame worn a with the same suit, but a touch of orange about her collar and black bead with here and there an orange-colored ornament about her neck. Do you know it made alt the mnerenee in the world aad the color altered the trying situation I know a womai. who has all of her clothes made in Baltimore by a wonderfully good modiste. Her gowns are beautiful, the material ex quisite snd everything about f hern per fect, exrept that aha alwaya looks un comfortable. No one ever looked their best and looked uncomfortable at the sine time. I asked a friond of mine, who was an expert corsetierr, what wa the fault in these costumes, and she mid without hesitation: "Too high bust corset." And after you had it called to your attention you knew instantly that the unnatural posture was caused by this very fact. Moving picture stars seem to be as interesting here aa elsewhere and people seem to lie quite as interested in their private affairs. Among the many things which are told of them in the paper ia what they fat,. To i Jhe many Mary I'ickford fans it might be interesting to know that Mary Pickford has many favorite csts, if the newspaper corre spondents are to be believed. I have it for a fact that this is one of the things which the little star not only like, best hut -a -make -best,- f o be -it known that she ia very human and liken after all of the tinsel and electric light glow to seek diversion in the little kitchen!' of her mother's bungalow, and this ia one of the many good things she concocts.
