CRITICIZE ORDINANCE OF AUDITORIUM RENTAL The recent ordinance fixing the rental rates of the auditorium wat criticised yesterday for the first time by friends of the Baleigh Elks who r,ecm to think there should be no charge for tha use of the auditorium upon the occasion of the Elks' Christmas tree. The criticism originated because the city charged 15 for the use of the au ditorium for the entertainment. In explaining the position of the city administration, Mayor Eldridga stated yesterday that there was no charge for the use of the auditorium but that the Elks were allowed the use free with the payment of the light, heat and janitor expenses. The rental rate for an aft ernoon under ordinary services. he states, vii I0 and d additional 110 for removing chairs sad carpet. Mayor Eldridge defended the recent ordinance fixing rental rstes. He ex plained thst the city, by adopting stand ard prices, is not profiting on the audi torium but merely making it possible to operate the building without a monetary loss to the city. The -suggestion, however, that the Elks should not bave to pay even the 15 sine th event is for needy ehil dren of the city brought response from Mayor Elridgs of an offer to donate personally a part of that amount. GAS SUPPLY IN CITY RUNS EXTREMELY LOW Householders in the eity who depend upon gas entirely for cooking havo fouud themselves in a somewhat pre carious condition for the past several days, gas pressuro being so low at times that it wat impossible to maintain a Mat. Wurning waa issued several days ago by the Carolina Power afid Light Company that unless use of gas was curtailed that it might become necessary to cut off the gas altogether. Apparently the warning haa not been heeded gen erally, and those who are dependant en tirely upon gas are the sufferers. During the recent coal shortage and extremely cold weather abnormally high demands were made upon .the gas plant when the normal demands had out growa the. capacity of the plant here. The company is now installing addi tional equipment to take cars of tho situation, and iisks all consumers who are not entirely defendant unnn iras to curtail its use until facilities are in-! stalled for meeting the whole demand. Bemick of Wilmington come True. Ho certain is he that there is oil hidden in the depths of the earth down in Pender and Duplin counties that he leased 40.000 acres of land from the State Board of Education yesterday snd will proceed to test his beliefs. The Department of Education will get one sixteenth of the proceeds, if there are any, and if there are not, it will lose nothing at all. The lands that are suspected of hid ing oil are a part of the public lands of the State that were divided up among the departments long years ago. It is mostly swamp land and heretofore no stretch of the imagination has been able to affix any value to it. It has served no purpose save that of breeding mos quitoes. Of these it prtduees millions annually. There are not few eitixens or the Southeastern section that hold to the opinion that there it' a vast quantity of oil in the earth down in that section. Notable among the protagonists of the netrnleum theory - is Col. Thomas w. iJisTrson,-fr years editor of the Wil mington Star, lie believes thst Aorta Carolina in general has everything that a beneficent providence ever designed for tbe benefaction of an unworthy people, and that naturally includes oil. Colonel Clawson has talked oil wells for eastern Carolina, believes in them absolutely, and has convinced others that there Is a fortune hidden at no great depth below the surface. He is not promoting any oil company, but he haa spread bis belief abroad nntil it has taken root in the minds of others, and hence the leasing of the State's property down in Duplinand Pender. No announcement has been Tnade of tbe immediate intentions of Mr. Bemick, whtf leased tbe property from the State board yesterday, 'but it is unlikely thnt he will ba long tbout making them pub lic. - MARRIAGE LICENSES The following marriage licenses were issued from the office of the Begister of Deeds yesterday: Willie M. ADDS TWO PARDONS TO CI Petition Six Feet Long From Ashe County Secures Free dom of Velmer Spurlin Governor Bickett -yesterday added two more pardons to his Christmas list of eighteen when he issued orders free ing Dennis Hairson, of Forsyth coun ty, convicted of mtrder in the second degree in January, 1913, and tenteneed to fifteen years in the State's prison, and Velmer Spurlin, of Ashe county. convicted of infanticide in 1916 and sentenced to ten years in the State's prison. A petition, six feet long, aigned by all the representative people pf ths com munity where the offense was commit ted, hsd powerful weight with the Gov ernor in granting pardoa to Velmer Spurlin. The woman has served four years, is in Grade A and there are no. protests to the pardoa. Of Dennis Hairson. Governor Bickett said: This defendant haa now served seven years, and baa made a model prisoner. The evidence ahows that both parties were engaging willingly in the fight. and each one was trying to use weapons st the time the homicide occurred. Tbe jurors who tried the case ssy that they am of opinion, the Jlaiflrton bas been sufficiently punished, and do not "re lieve that it would benefit the State nor the prisoner for him to be kept in the penitentiary any longer. Tha sher iff, of t orsyth county writes that hs has a vivid recollection of the circum stances attending the shooting, and that he is of opinion that the ends of justice have been met by the prisoner serving seven years. And similar letters axe written by deputy sheriffs of tha coun ty, and the police officials of the' city of Winston-Salem. For these reasons a conditional pardon ia granted." FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD NEGRO SHOOTS PLAYMATE IN PLAY After a preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace J. E.
