this city, at the service just previous to
the ordination of Rev. JamOs Preston
J'.urke to the priesthood. Mr. W. T.
Purvis of this city was baptized and
, also confirmed by the Bishop at this
morning service. Rev. Walter J, Smith
of Clmrlotte was present. Back in the
80's Mr. Purvis and Mr. Smith Were
warm friends at Tarboro. Mr. Smith
was rector at Tarboro at that time.
About that snmo time Bishop Cheshire,
then at the University of North Caro
IVa. a vnni man in the ministry, or
ganized the Durham mission, and would
va'k oivr here and conduct services.
Thi wuh the beginning of Ht. Philip's
parish. In 1881 Mr. Smith, then rector
at Tarboro, was instrumental in having
y his Sunday school present St. Philip's
I church in Durham with a beautiful bap
tismay font, which bears the inscription,
. "Presented by the Sunday school of
Calvary church, Tarboro, 1881," and is
,.nsed by the church now. The coinci
dence is .that after thirty-eight years,
the three friends of other flays should
meet at the same baptismal font one
had been instrumental in blessing the
work of his co-laborer, who was now
. bishop of the Diocese of North Caro
lina, to administer the rite qf baptism
to another friends of the days of 1H81.
