Jarvis in Chatham.
We met Gov. Jarvis at Wilmington
yesterday, and he informed us that he
expected to visit Chatham and speak
here sometime in the latter part of
September. He was in fine spirits
and confident of beating Buxton by
not less than twenty thousand major-
y-
Cox and Hledsoe.
The opposing candidates for Con
gress in this District are now canvass
ing in this county. They opened the
canvass yesterday at Griffin's store
(New Hope township) and the dem
ocrats were jubilant at the result of
the discussion. Major Bledsoe led
off intending to speak an hour and a
half, but finished his speech in an
hour, and then finding out that his
time was not out, he commenced over
again and scattered badly, only repeat
ing portions of what he had already
said. On Saturday Gen. Cox will
leave for Granville county. Ho need
have no fears of Chatham not giving!
him ft handsome majority.

Buxton's visit to Granville was a

A Monster Tree.
A huge cypress drawn from the
river bottom u'tove Kinston, last year,
by General Ransom's derricks and
thrown out on tho bank, becoming
dry, was floated down the river last
week by the freshet and captured at
Parrott's mills here at Kinston and
sawed up into lumber. It measurod
75 feet in length, and the sap being
rotted off, turned out about 3,500
feet of heart lumber. Kinston Jour

The Franklinton correspondent of

Last Saturday a Mr. Perry was
drowned in John CbappeH's pond, by

a hog of Calvin Wilder's rode in here

off; and on the same day Rob Stone's

drawn alive with rope and tackle.

A Mecklenburg farmer, says the
Charlotte Observer, has just sold one
hundred and twenty bales of cotton
which he has been holding through

tho price would go still higher than it
was in the midst of last season. Had
he sold then, he would have been

Messrs. II. A. Cook and (. B.
Halyburton had just completed a saw
mill and shingle machine, after a
couple of months' work, twelve miles
west of this place, on South river, uud
had been running them successfully
abont ten days, when, Thursday
night of last week, as they sat upon
the dam after supper talking over
their business affairs, there was a
sudden rush of water and the dam
burst to pieces. Iu a moment the
two men found themselves precipi
tated into the current, lighting aud
drifting with the debris of the dam.
Cook was washed about fifty yards
down the stream when ho caught on
the shingle house, which was itself
under the water, where he held until
the water subsided. Ho was beateu
with the timbers and rafts, receiving
numerous bruises and cuts upon his
face, head, and dill'erent parts of his
body, and having his clothes nearly
all torn off. Halyburton was swept
about a quarterof a milo down stream
and when he came to realize his sit
uation was bunging to a bush. He
finally got a foot-hold aud came to
land in a bruised and greatly dis
tressed condition. Ue vomited a
large amount of water, casting np
with it a quautity of gravel which he
had unconsciously swallowed.
