They attack all alike men, aywen and children and the faces and hands of many of our citizens show the scars of their nightly con flicts with their victorious enemies, who seera determined to wage a war (A extermination. Jarvis at Wilmington yesterday, and he informed us that he expected to visit Chatham and speak here sometime in the latter part of September. He was in fine spirits and confident of beating Buxton by not less than twenty thousand major- y- Cox and Hledsoe. The opposing candidates for Con gress in this District are now canvass ing in this county. They opened the canvass yesterday at Griffin's store (New Hope township) and the dem ocrats were jubilant at the result of the discussion. Major Bledsoe led off intending to speak an hour and a half, but finished his speech in an hour, and then finding out that his time was not out, he commenced over again and scattered badly, only repeat ing portions of what he had already said. On Saturday Gen. Cox will leave for Granville county. Ho need have no fears of Chatham not giving! him ft handsome majority. One Day Later. STATE NEWS. Buxton's visit to Granville was a huge failure. He inspired no en thusiasm; on the contrary many of his colored hearers went to sleep un der tho iulliction, aud the white Rad leaders felt that it was better he had remained away. Granville Free iauce. A Monster Tree. A huge cypress drawn from the river bottom u'tove Kinston, last year, by General Ransom's derricks and thrown out on tho bank, becoming dry, was floated down the river last week by the freshet and captured at Parrott's mills here at Kinston and sawed up into lumber. It measurod 75 feet in length, and the sap being rotted off, turned out about 3,500 feet of heart lumber. Kinston Jour nal. Franklin Items. The Franklinton correspondent of the Raleigh News says: Last Saturday a Mr. Perry was drowned in John CbappeH's pond, by overturning a boat. Last Thursday a hog of Calvin Wilder's rode in here on the cowcatcher, and quietly got off; and on the same day Rob Stone's stone-blind horse fell into C. J. Ward's well, from which he was drawn alive with rope and tackle. William Evans to-day begins his fast of forty-five days. University Railroad. We visited tho work on this road Monday, August ICtb. We were glad to meet with Gen. Hoko, who was kind enough to give us some in formation. The General says that the grading to Chapel Hill will be completed at once, and tnat tue iron will bo put down as soon as the roud ; Tho Laads nre hQyf Rt 1 urai work just west of the iron mine, go ing back toward University Station. There is about one-third of a milo to be graded in order to connect with the portion of the road already grad ed. A Mecklenburg farmer, says the Charlotte Observer, has just sold one hundred and twenty bales of cotton which he has been holding through out the year with the expectation that tho price would go still higher than it was in the midst of last season. P. & Y.V. B. B. up the Yadkin Valley, will be commenced in a few days. Col. L. C. Jones, chief engineer, and Dr. Nercus Mendenhall, one of his assistants, are now preparing to ex amine the line and make an instru mental survey as soon as possible," A Remarkable Jury In onr Superior Court yesterday was a jury composed of married men; six were from the city and six from the country. Tho deputy sheriff in charge was a married man and the jury was bung. All day they quar relled and not till sundown did they put on an appearance of business, when the foreman addressed tho jury stating that he was a married niau and wanted to go home, each one in his turn making the same statement. Ue failed to sink, and tho jury and the crowd said "not proven." Kin ston Journal. Narrow Eseape. Messrs. II. A. Cook and (. B. Halyburton had just completed a saw mill and shingle machine, after a couple of months' work, twelve miles west of this place, on South river, uud had been running them successfully abont ten days, when, Thursday night of last week, as they sat upon the dam after supper talking over their business affairs, there was a sudden rush of water and the dam burst to pieces. Iu a moment the two men found themselves precipi tated into the current, lighting aud drifting with the debris of the dam. Cook was washed about fifty yards down the stream when ho caught on the shingle house, which was itself under the water, where he held until the water subsided. Ho was beateu with the timbers and rafts, receiving numerous bruises and cuts upon his face, head, and dill'erent parts of his body, and having his clothes nearly all torn off. Halyburton was swept about a quarterof a milo down stream and when he came to realize his sit uation was bunging to a bush. He finally got a foot-hold aud came to land in a bruised and greatly dis tressed condition.
