The republican leaders in this county having become disgusted with the miserable canvass being made by their candidates, and reali zing that they must have help, have eent to Raleigh for 3Iaj. R. C. Bad ger (called by Joe Turner "Rotating Dick") to come to their rescue. Ac cordingly that gentleman has been actifely canvasiiug this county for the last week, but the people do not j seem to appreciate him, as his an-; diences haTe been ridiculously small- j He spole here Last Monday to five j white republicans and abont thirty j tiegroea, as we are informed, for we i did not have the honor (?) of hear- jnj him. AVe were pleased to learn ! that he was tery complimentary to Mr. Manning, saying that as a mem ber of the Legislature he would ba an honor to the couutj aud State an 1 if he (Badger) lived here he would vote for him. He also complimen ted Mr. Merritt, so that he seems to ha?e "gone back" on our independ ent friends, and we doubt not that many honest republicans in Chat ham think as he does and will vote for the men who will best represent the county. All the convicts at work be tween those points have been put to work on the other side of Greens boro' and the grading is being pnshid iosrardsthe mountains. Let the voters bear in mind that this great work is the result of dem ocratic rule . We very much doubt if there is another legislative ticket in the State equal to ours. We are proud j of these gentlemen as democrats and as countymen, and we cannot doubt that the good people of Chatham will show their appreciation of them by giving them the largest vote ever polled in this county. They are gen tlemen of the highest personal char acter, of sound judgment, true to every trust and faithful in all things, and will reflect honor 011 our county as members of the General Assembly. Why should any democrat ref use to vote for any of them ? The out-look is most encouraging for the election of all oar county candi dates by handsome majorities. All that is necessary to win a glorious victory is for the democrats to go to the polls. The excellent speeches and b: illiant canvass of our candidate, will we think bring out a full vote, probably the largest ever given. C Edctos Record : The following is a meagre report of a talk between some of our fellow citizens who seem to be tak ing a lively interest in political mat ters this year. The conversation took place within the last few days and your readers will doubtles read ily know each of the participants as his time comes to speak : "Hiram" Well Mr. Mc have you any of your best with you ? I con fess that my spirits (though far be low proof at first) have considerably gone down since "Aaron" came out for civil rights and mixed schools. "Mr. Mc. No, Hiram, I dreened the tickler as soon as I found oat that "Tom" was going to come square to the front for Buxton who declares that he would be willing to appoint negro Judges. I had given up the hope of fooling any sensible demo crat even if "Aaron" had not declared himself a thoroughbred Garfield church and school-mixing radical, "fom." Didn't I call Buxton a christian gentleman though and did I not promise if you'd prop me up in my fight against "Sieve" and you fellers got beat I'd make you both deputies ? "Hiram, Yes but taeres less consolation in that promise, than there is in Mr. Mc s. t mpty I aler, for you have promised the constables in every township the same place. If promises would buy democrats you could beat a whole convention with out any understanding with Chapin's Caucus. "Tom." Young man, don't get too smart! You promised the radical caucus to support their ticket, if they independent and stand mum. Well tell Aaron to say while he is in favor of mixed schools &c, yet he wont open the matter again until we beat out the democrats. That is he must say this all fixed up to suit the occasion. "Mr. Mc" Boys fix it smooth, or else let Dave read it so nobody can hear it. This is getting to be a par ticular time. . "Hiram."
