Wo cm scarcely nalize that four yearn a jteriod ns long as the. eontinuaneo of fche late, war Isnve elapsed uinee wo lhunclied upon tho uncorfain sea of journalimn. for our voyage has been bo pleasant and prosperous that year after year has glided by almost im perceptibly. The avomgo lifo of SewKpapora is so short, that, although only four years old, tho Recoup is al ready regarded as one of the old es fablihhed papers of the !kote. and hes acquired a reputation of which we aro not ashamed. Indeed its success has been quite remarkable, especially so Considering our distance from the railway and telegraph lines and the small size of the town in which it is publishe '.. Its eirculHtion has stead ily increased year after yea?, and it Bow begins a new year with a larger list of subscribers and brighter pros pects than ever before. We duly ap preciate the kindly words of cheer that so often have greeted our ears, and Which enable us fho better to survive the unkind criticisms that fall to tho lot of all editors. We shall, in the future, strive to deserve the former, and survive '-ha latter. We have no Hew promises to make, but will con tinue to furnish the people of Chat hum with a county paper, of which they may r.ot feel ashun.e-!. and whose weekly visits will we hope be welcomed at everv familv fireside. TnECosvENTios of tho democrat'? Of this county, that was held here yesterday, was attended by a larger number -f delegates than any other convention ever heid iu Chatham, and wo havo r.evi r before known such harmony of feeling to prevail. It conclusively proved that tho demo crats of Chatham arc solid are thor oughly united and determined to win at the coming election. No man who attended that convention can have any doubt of the election of its nominees. It is a strong ticket and cant lie beat. The county candidates are better known probably than the legislative candidates, who have nev er appeared before the public, but who will make themselves well known before the election. Let us ail goto work and elect the entire ticket by at least live hundred majority! TiieSic.; r-'i:;;! trial has at last dosed and the chief conspirators have escaped their deserved punishment. The jury convicted Miner and llerdell. but disagreed as to T.rady and the two l)orsevs ten of the jurors vot ing for tlieir conviction and two for their acquittal. Tlr.s has been one o1 the niobt notable trials ever held in this country. It began nearly four months ago. Tho speeches of the lawyers consumed one month of the time. P ib':? opinion is almost unan imous against ii'l the defendants, and tho presiding j'.idg! charged str. against t he.":. Of e. iiir.se it is believed that bribe -V wim- used to influence the jury, and ti;':.; 'in ."guilty scoundrels have escape 1 the clutches of tho law. Dkmv!!ati who may ho dissatisfied with the present system of county government should not for that rea son aid in restoring to powir t'le re publican party. That is no excuse for any democrat to turn radical and vote to placo his State p.in under the ruinous rule of the .same men who bo plundered aud oppressed our peo ple. If any reform is needed tho dem ocratic pnrty alone can best bring it about. Tho idea of joining tho repub lican psrty for the purpose of bring ing about a reformation in anything or anybody! Think for a moment of those who compose the two parties. The rrpubli.'an arty i-i -rth Caro '.ina i ci!nro-l chiefly of rmr colored population, rrmst of whom were iguo rhntplr.vo. It is true that some of our intelligent, substantial white citizens aro also republicans, but their number is quite smu'l compared with the. black element of that party. On the other haud the great bulk of the white . people compose f he democratic party. To which party thru can fhe interests of the State be bert entrusted ' Think seriously of this. If the present system of county government has become objectionable to tho people cf North Carolina the democratic pnrty can safely bo on trusted with the work cf remedying it bo as to remove any objections. At their late Sfalo convention the demo crat a expressly declared in their plat form that they '"ahe not wemei to Y PAnTTiTI.AH FOHVf OF Oot'JSTV OOV- ernment." If any change will be j henefieiul to the people tho democrat - ! ie party will make .:nl no demo- -I-. r.rrr. f'irir rad'etil on c"iinf iOiii'iuljM- th.-:. Leaving the Liberals.
