tat THURSDAY. - Oct. 17, liim. II. A LONDON. Editor. Theke was a conference, or se cret caucus, of lh 1U publican leaders of this State held al Greensboro oa last Saturday. T hero were preneut nearly all the members of the llepublicuu State executive committee, and also a number of other prominent Re publicans. It is a significant fact that nearly all the Republican State commit teniou are federal office-holders. This is nothing new, however, for such hnu been the case ever since the Republican party has existed iu this State. In fact there would have been no Re publican party in this State for mauy years if there had been no Federal offices and patronage with which to tempt and reward hun gry office-seekers. It is said that at this confer ence special stress was laid on the importance of pursuing such a policy as would attract good men to the Republican party. This is an admission, and it certainly is a fact, that the Republican party in North Carolina, asiu every South ern State, has been sadly defic ient in "good men." While there are and have been some good 1111 n in the Republican, party in this State, yet it is a notorious fact that good white men generally would not join a party, a majority of whose members ere ignorant negroes. The most prominent speaker at this Republican conference was Harry Skinner, the former Popu list leader ami": special champion of the Sub-Treasury humbug, and who iu 1892 declin- d the Topu'.ist nomination for Gi-ver ior bei a ise he was afraid it might help to elect the Republican nominee. How times and men change! Eiohtkex divorce suits are f r trial at tho present term of the superior court of Wake county. This is a startling statement and should cause, all good citizens to condemn tho divorce laws which disgrace our State. We do uot cite this large num ber of divorce suits as a rellection on'ako county especially, for unfortunately there aie many other counties which have at every court just as many divorce suits in proportion to their population. Wake is uot any worse iu this respect than other counties. In every county, at nearly every term of court, there are several divorces granted. Uefore the war divorces wore of rare occurrence in this State, as all our older readers will remem ber. Cut it must not be under stood from this that the divorces are ehielly granted to the colored people. Uufortuuately too many divorces aro granted to white people. The trouble is that our divorce laws have been amended so much that there are now too many grounds allowed for di vorces. And an unsuccessful ef fort was made in the hist Legisla ture to extend these grounds still farther. Our lax divorce laws should be revist d and repealed, and to ac complish this end all u'ood citizens ah mid use their iulhiuueo and Lest efforts. A novel suit was tried last week in the superiour court of liruus wick county. It was a civil ac tion brought by Mr. Francis M. Moore for tho recovery of 20, 000 from the NavassaCluauo Com pany as damages to his farm caus ed by the chemicals used in mak ing their fertilizers. Tho allega tion was that these chemicals poi soned the atmospkeie and des troyed, or greatly injured, the crops that were planted on the plaintiffs farm, which is adjacent to the company's factory. The jury gave the plaintiff over .utio damages. j How have the mighty fallen!' The idea of Hal. yer being a "Wall Street plutocrat." W ho i would have believed it oaly a few shoit years ago?
