Bail luck seems to befall the ' coalmine at Cumnock and its owners. In December, 1805, there was an explosion in the mine which killed 3!) persoua, and in 180(5 a receiver was appointed for the conipauy then operating the mine, known as the Langdou- Henszey Coal Mining Co. The mine was then sold to pay the debts, w hich it lacked a great deal of doing. Another company (or a company under another name) then operated the mine uutu there was another explosion iu May 1000, which killed 21 persons. Af ter that the "Chatham Coal and Iron Company" was incorporated and operated the mine. We much regret the financial embarrassment of the company and the suspension of work at the mine, but hope the latter may be resumed at au early day. It in a great hardship ou the employees of the company to lie delayed so long iu the payment of their wa ges, which are needed for their daily support. This appointment of the receiv er is temporary until the first day of April, wheu Judge Bryan at Rockingham (where he will then be holding court) will hear the application to make the appoint ineut permanent. Dam At Buckhora Falls. Patinos, March 12, 1904. Dear Sir: When the great dam or wall, which is being built at Biickhoru Falls, on the Cape Fear river, is completed, Chatham's supply of fish from that source will be .no more. March 12 Gover nor Warfield yesterday signed the burnt district commission bill, and there will now be no obstacle in the way of a speedy rebuilding of the eighty blocks that were de stroyed iu the receut contlagra tiou. The commission will have charge of the widening of certain congested business thoroughfares and of tho general work of im proving the streets as the rebuild ing progresses. Killed By Tree Puller. Lincolntou, N. C, March 14. John J. Heafner and David Wise were using a tree puller this eve ning about five o'clock when a tree fell on them both, killing Heafner instantly, and seriously, if uot fatally, iujuriug Wise, lieafuer was ono of the most prominent and wealthy farmers in Liucolu county. They also entered the safe of Mr. Cull Sikes, and got some money and destroyed some valuable papers. This is the boldest burglary ever committed in Monroe. There is1 no clue to the robbers. Kirk, a farmer living six miles from Dm ham, was paiufully wounded late last night by his brother. The two brothers were fishing when their dog treed an o'possum. Ono brother went to the dog and was soon followed by the other. In the meautimo the first Kirk had gone up the tree, and when tho latter arrived ho shot him out of the tree with a rifle.
