X3. A. LONDON, Editor. TIHESDAT. DEO!ER 29, 1911 KERRY CHRISTMAS. Before THE Kecosd again &eets its readers another Chriat- CSts win have come and gone. Tfe are now approaching the hap $iest season of the year the joy- us Christmas tide when is com meliorated the anniversary of that greatest event in the world's history, when the Angelic Hosts proclaimed 4 Peace on earth, rood-will to all mankind." The birth of Christ is not only the era by which the world dates all its events and marks its time, hut each anniversay is the great st day of the year to many mil Hons. What a flood of happy Bfemories come to the old as they recall their past Chrlstmases, and what happy hopes delight the young as they look forward to the future! The appropriate observance of Christmas is more general now than formerly, when so many professing Christians observed the occasion only as a social hoi iday and abstained from any re ligious exercises. It is the day when nan's noblest impulses are im the ascendant, and when his better nature asserts itself. It is the day above all other days trhtn is felt not only the father hood f God but the brotherhood f man. Tke truest and best joy that 6a can have at Christmas is that ftxperiefteed in making others happy. If yon doubt this, just try it and be convinced. Seek some forlorn child or afflicted person and try to make it the happiest Christmas of his or her fife. Christmas is the greatest oc casion ef the year for the ex change of gifts, and indeed a most beautiful custom has- al most degenerated into a nuis ance. While the exchange of gifts is a most appropriate cus tom for the day when . is com memorated God's great gift of his only son for man's redemp tion, yet this time honored cus tom is now so greatly abused and diverted from its original Jwrpose that it has lost much of its beauty. To each and all its readers The Record extends the greet ings ef this joyous occasipn and Wishes for them a very merry Christmas! cause their three-months' enlist ment had expired, on the eve of the tattle of Bull Ran. We are much pleased to note the victory of our State Univers ity last Friday nisrht in the debate with the University of Pennsyl vania- This is the fifth annual debate between those two uni versities, and the fourth victory won by our University. This should be more than full com pensation for the defeat in foot ball by the University of Vir ginia. Killed in Railroad Wreck. Odesfa, Minn.. Dec. 18. A Terrible Blunder Hon. Ashley Horne has giv en $10,000 for the erection on Capitol Square at Raleigh of a monument to the women of the Confederacy. Efforts have been made for several years for the erection of such a monument at the capital of every Southern State. Our House of Represen tatives in 1909 passed a bill ap propriating $10,000 for such a monument at Raleigh but the Senate defeated it by a small majority. All efforts failed to ret the last Legislature to pass such a bill, and now the eener wis gift of a private citizen will "js uu mis disgrace to our State. Sach a gift will be not only a aanument to the women of the Cenfederaey but also to the public spirited and patriotic citizen, who has aeTved his State so well both an in peace, and who his bhw .y friends hope may be spared r vu&my more years of useful ats. to neglect, liver trouble.
