We have at all times been opposed to the annexation of any part of Williams, or any other township, to Durham or any oth er County. Some of our readers miscon strued an editorial appearing in this paper on February 17th to mean that we were in favor of such a dismemberment of Chat ham. The only intention of this article was to say that, if the Legislature saw fit to annex Wil liams township, or any portion of it, to Durham and the citizens of that territory were satisfied, then, after it was accomplished, the rest of us might as well be content. But we did not seek to convey the meaning that we be lieved that Chatham County should give up any portion of its population or territory without a protest. We regret very much that our attitude was misunder stood. But in our opposition to the prop-1 osition of cutting off any portion of this County and adding it to another, and in our gratitude to the Legislative committee that saw fit to report the bill on this .matter unfavorably, we must not lose sight of the conditions that prompted the citizens of Williams township to ask that a portion of 'their township be annexed to Durham. They need roads and they need them badly. And it is the duty of the County Commis sioners to build one or more roads through Williams township that will give these citizens an outlet to Pittsboro and other portions WAIT! WATCH! Gun to Shoot 200 Miles The secret of the famous Ger man gun that threw shells 75 miles in io Paris has never been made public and perhaps never learned. However, the French and Belgians are testing a gun which they expect to throw pro jectiles 200 miles! It is said that an entirely new principle is used. The pressure is kept constantly in the barrel, and even after the projectile has left the barrel it increases its speed, perhaps somewhat on the principle of the rocket. There is now enough cotton in the world, unspun, to last nearly two years. World production of cotton fof factory consumption in 1919 was 1,100,000 bales greater than the amount consumed. VICTOR R. Hughes as Secretary of State may truly be construed as an ad mission by President Harding that he was wrong in his stand on the League of Nations in the recent political . campaign. Mr. Hughes was one of the leading Republicans who was heartily in favor of this country's entering the League. And with him in charge of our foreign affairs, mayhap there is some hope that the near future will witness this nation's taking its proper place -among the other leading nations of 4;he world in the edeavor toes tahlish and maintain permanent world peace. That Edwin Denby, erstwhile enlisted man in the Navv and Marine Corps, should become the - official 'head of the United States .Navy by being appointed its Secretary may well recall pipe dreams of many of enlisted per sonnel in the recent world war -as they discussed the shortcom ings of their superior officers.
