London and son .Lawrence nave oeen to Greensboro on a short trip. Mrs. Esther Brooks and Miss Emma Ray, of High Point, have been here on a short visit to Mrs. W. 0. Petty. , A. C. Ray, Lacv Alston, and Rev. Jonas Barclay expect to at tend a meeting to organize the Laymen's Movement in the Fay etteville Presbytery, at Fayette ville, Saturday. T. P. Barclay, of Danville, Va., son of Rev. Jonas Barclay, leaves this week to enter the School of Physical Education at Ithaca, New York, where he will take a course. Last Sunday night Rey. Jonas Barclay preached at the Baptist church, as the Presbyterian church had not been fitted up for the cool weather. His sermon was very much enjoyed Late Pears J. B. Clegg. of lower township presented the with some nice late Keifer pears Monday, and also gave us two fully developed Harvest pears of the second crop. N. M. Hill of this place also had a light second crop of pears on his trees. Rev. Jonas Barclay will con duct services at Larhbsville next sunday afternoon. There will be services at the Presbyterian, Baptist, and Epis copal churches here next Sunday morning at eleven o'clock, and at the Methodist Church and the Episcopal Chuch next Sunday night at 7;30. Rev. J. D. Bundy presiding elder of the Fayette ville District, will preach at the Methodist Church at night. The public is invited to the ex ercises held at- the school every Wednesday morning by the dif ferent grades. Mrs. Mattie Thampson has gone on a week's visit to her sis ter, Mrs. W. W. Rose, of Fran linton. Mrs. Jas. S. Wrenn is taking her place in the post office. Miss Evelyn Ray has returned home from the Greensboro Col lege for Women on account of ill health. Mrs. J. M. Burnett, of Hack ney, has been here on a short visit to her sister, Mrs. Fannie Moore. Mrs. T. A. Cheatham, of Pine hurst, is here visiting friends. Master Jack London, of Char lotte, has been hre on a visit to his grandmother. Mrs. W. L. London. Mr. and Mrs. Woodson Powell, Mr. and Mrs. Vander Johnson and daughter, Camilla, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed, R. Hinton went on a short trip to Durham one day last week. Dr. R. M. Farrell and family have moved into their new home. A. C. Ray went to Lillington and Fayetteville on business last week. Miss Lillian Ray, of Raleigh, has been here on a short visit to her parents. George W. Brewer and family have moved into the old Brewer Siome. Pays For Property. Guy Haaden was indicted by the Kirk Holt Hardware Com pany last week for "disposing of mortgaged property, ihe case was heard before 'bquire J. K. Blair. After hearing the. evi dence and upon the recommen dation of the solicitor, the de fendant was allowed to pav the debt and costs. The evidence was measrxe and the settlement seemed to be satisfactory concerned. Has Competitive Buyers. The old cotton platform on Chatham street, in Sanford, has been repaired and enlarged and made an official place in Sanford for the weighing and buying of cotton. Competitive buyers have been secured for that place and the market is now paying a price for cotton equivalent to any town in the state. This means a great deal to those Chatham county people that patronize the Sanford market. Misses Amy and Ruth Womb'e, of Moncure, spent the week-end with their sister, Mrs. R. H. Marks. David and Frank Thomas, of Raleigh, Albeit Thomas, of the Cary high school and Ralph Thomas, of Haywood, spent the week-end at the Boylan Ranch with their mother, Mrs. -Sallie Stedman Thomas. ? We were very glad to have Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Nash at Sunday School again. They have recent ly returned from a motor trip through the mountains of West ern Carolina. The new library has been re-1 ceived and will be open from 10:30 a. m. until 12 o'clock every Sunday. The books may be kept two weeks only. They spent a pleasant interesting even ing. ' Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Harring ton plan to move into their pretty new bungalow sometime this week. Their many friends here and elsewhere wish for them much success and happiness in their new home. Everything possible is being doni to complete the work on the school building this week in order to be re?dy for the opening of school. It is hoped now that school can begin next Monday, but if the work cannot be finished the opening will be postponed for a week. Bo'h are splendid instruc tors and we are looking forward to a most successful school year, The desultory work period of the Cherokee Brick Co. seems to be at an end for awhile at least Orders for bricks come in almost daily. The company is taxed to meet the demand and is running regularly with a full force. Nat urally this work may sometimes become monotonous to the regu lar workmen but to one who is not familiar with brick making, there is nothing more interesting or instructive than a aay spent on the yards. OFTEN. Chatham Church. Not Dead Yet. Last Saturday night Leon E. Smith was buried eight miles of of Sanford, owing to the con dition of the body it could not be kept out of the ground until Sun day. The body was found side of the railroad track near Mul lins, S. C, in a dreadful mangled condition. On the same day, Saturday, Smith who was work ing near Wilmington, heard of his death and went to the city to learn the particulars. Now the authorities have a case on hand to determine just who it was they buried near Sanford. Misses Lucy Connel l and Sank ie Perry spent Friday night with Miss Lelia Burns. The Sunday School was organ ized at Center Grove church Sun day afternoon. - Hereafter there will be Sunday School in the af ternoon at three o'clock in that church. We are very sorry to state that vliss Stacy Eddins is home from school on account of sickness. We hope she wili soon be able to resume her school work. Roland and Dixon Burns are expecting to leave Monday for South Carolina where they will operate a saw mill. Corn shuckings and 'possum hunting are the only amusements in this community at present. Mrs. J. N. Fields who lives in the Wicker home, and while there was taken sick: Her death came as a shock to ner many friends.
