Howll you swap! Mr. .James Womble spent the week end here with his father, Mr. David Womble. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh T. Homady, of Laurmburg, are visiting relatives in Chatham. Little Catherine Overacre is on an extended visit to her aunt in Rich mond, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Farrell and children spent the week end with rel atives in Raleigh. After spending a few days in Ral eigh, Miss Evelyn Ray has returned to her home here. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Holder, of Dur ; ham, spent a short while here Sunday with Mrs. Lula Jones. Mr. Gerald Leftwich is spending some time with his cousins, Messrs Luman and Glivion Overacre. Don’t forget the Farrell reunion to be held at Hanks Chapel Christian church next Sunday, August 3rd. Mrs. S. D. Johnson was taken to a hospital in Durham Sunday, where she underwent a minor operation. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Boone, of Carrboro, were here Sunday on a vis it to his mother, Mrs. J. W. Boone. Miss Lilia Edwards, stenographer for McPherson & Barnes, Raleigh, is here on a visit to Mrs. Rufus Far rell. Miss Gertrude Seymore, of Apex, Rt. 4, was a visitor in the home of Miss Maggie Ellis, on Rt. 3, Pittsboro, last week. Mrs. J. J. Thomas and daughters, Verdie and Rosa, Rt. 2, Pittsboro, were callers at The Record office on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Burns, of Rox boro, spent a short while here Sun day with parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Bums. Mr. Carl Jones, on his way home at Durham, from Camp McClellan, stopped over here Sunday with friends for a short while. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Leftwich have returned to their home in Richmond, Va., after spending several days with her brother here, Mr. W. H. Over acre. A postal card from Mr. Frank Pearce says he is having a real good time in Philadelphia. He is with the U. S. S. Dobbin, now in the navy yard at that city. More horses and horse traders are here this week than seen in a long time. One thing about them is that, nearly all stock is in good order— not many “plugs’* among them. There will be an ice cream supper at Mt. Pleasant M. E. church Satur day, August 16th, from 4 to 9 o’clock. The proceeds will go to the piano fund. The public is invited to be pres ent. Mrs. Henry A. London will have a reunion of her family next Saturday, when Mrs. J. H. Anderson, of Fay etteville, Mrs. J. H. Cordon, of Ral eigh, Mrs. Fred Jerome, of Clayton, and Mr. and Mrs. Isaac London, of Rockingham, will be present. The A. M. E. Zion colored church of Pittsboro, raised $110.25 at a sing ing rally Sunday. The contest was between Moncure, Fayetteville and the local choir. Rev. E. W. Sloan is the pastor of this church. The proceeds will be used for general church ex penses. Mr. John Thrift, who lives on the Phillips farm, three miles west of Pittsboro on route 1, sent The Rec ord a curiosity Monday in the shape of an ear of com. It was one big ear in the center and was dolled up all around with nine smaller ears. With the exception of one of them, all the smaller ears were well filled out with, grains of com. Mrs. J. W. Autry and three sons, John Watson, Jr., David Green and Paul Geddie, of Carrboro, are keeping camp near Fayetteville and in the mean time thev will visit relatives and friends, spending about five weeks in Cumberland county. After holding three meetings, Rev. J. W. Autry will join them for a few days the latter part of August. While on their way to Durham Sat urday afternoon, a car driven by Geo. Saunders, colored, and containing six other colored passengers, was run in to by another car about five miles west of Durham. One of the front wheels of the Saunders car was knocked off but no other damage was done and no one was hurt. The car driven by a white man, was not dam aged so far as we could leam, and it never stopped going. Many friends in Chatham will re gret to learn of the death of Mrs. J. J. Thomas, which occurred in Greens boro Saturday morning. Mrs Thomas was bom in Columbus county and was married to Mr. Thomas on June 9th, this year. She soon became desperate ly ill and spent several weeks in a hospital in Greensboro, where she died. Mr. Thomas is a son of Mrs. Sallie Thomas of Siler City, Rt. 5, and is well known in Chatham and has many friends who will sympathize with him in his bereavement. Another one of Chatham’s hard working farmers has encountered bad luck. Last Saturday Mr. B. M. San ders, of Rt. 1, Pittsboro lost a val uable mule; the greatest thing about it was that Mr. Sanders had just fin ished paying Apr the mule. Mr. Saun ders is nearing 73 years of age and he has a broken shoulder, despite these handicaps he makes good crops and is constantly on the go, doing something worth while. We trust that the good people of the county will i help him in his loss. Mrs. James L. Griffin has returned from a several days trip to Morehead City. . Bom to Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Poe, Siler City, Rt. 5, July 19, a son, Wade Lyman. One of the finest fox dogs in the county, owned by Mr. T. M. Bland, died Monday afternoon. Mr. Bland says he would not have taken S9OO for this hound. Mrs. I. H. Straughan, of Rt 2, Pitts boro, left Saturday for a two weeks stay at Lake Junaluska and other points in Western North Carolina. Dr. Luther C. Rollins, of Fuquay Springs, has succeeded Dr. J. D. Gregg in his practice of dentistry at Siler City, and assumed his office work on Monday. Robert B. Oldham, of Goldston, Rt. 1, writes The Record that he is glad to be back in Chatham again. He came home from Oteen Saturday and says he attended church at Antioch Sunday and heard a good sermon in the af ternoon and again at night. By reference to another column it will be seen that there will be an auction sale of dry goods, shoes and notions at Connell & Johnsons store Saturday morning, August 2nd, at 10 o’clock, continuing until everything is sold. Mr. Hugh Hornady is the auc tioneer and he is worth listening to if you do not buy. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. C. Cheek, Mrs. Emma Cheek, Miss Cornelia Cheek, of Sanford, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Talley, John Tucker Talley, Miss Alice Talley, of Bonsai, Mr. ‘and Mrs. Charles Fox, of Siler City, were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Dark at their home, Oakmont Farm, on the Siler City highway, where a sumptuous .picnic dinner was enjoyed. THE REVIVAL CONTINUED. Local Briefs From Our Friends at Goldston and Community. Goldston, July 28.—Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Horne, of Plymouth, Fla., are visiting friends and relatives in and around Goldston. « Miss Edith Oldham, of Greensboro, is spending her vacation with home folks. Misses Grace and Ruth Burke and Margaret Barber have returned home after attending summer school at Asheville Normal. Miss Louise Womble has returned after a visit to Reidsville. Dr. J. E. Bums, who for the past year has been doing post graduate work at the City Hospital, New York City, is visiting his parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Burns. Miss Emma Kate Burns has return ed home from Plymouth, Fla., where she has been visiting for the past six months. Mr. O. Z. Barber is erecting some new bungalows which will be a cred it to our town. It is understood that Mr. Barber will sell these homes to some of the carpenters who work f<?r him. Revival services will continue un til Wednesday at the school nouse. There were five additions to the Pres byterian church Sunday. Rev. J. S. Cook, of Leaksville, is preaching pow erful sermons, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Jonas Barclay. Revival services will begin at the JVfethodist church on August 6th. Rev. H. L._Whitten, pastor of the church, has secured Rev. John E.. Lamb, of Wilmore, Ky., to do the preaching for this meeting. Mr. Lamb will also hold meetings at Jones Chapel ‘und Asbury. The meeting at Jones Chapel to start August 17fS and at Asbury August 20th. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Hester and chil dren spent part of last week * at White Lake Beach and Elizabethtown. Bridges, of Ab erdeen were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Williams Sunday. Little Miss Elzada Abernathy has gone to Aberdeen for a weeks stay. Miss Adelaide Cole, of Riggsbee, spent Sunday with Mrs. E. Riggsbee. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Durham, of Carrboro, spent Sunday afternoon with relatives here. Mr. J. E. Sturdivant has been on a short visit to his daughter, Mrs. H. Tillman, of Burlington. Mr. W. I. Snider and son, Clayton, motored to Burlington Saturday af ternoon. Mr. Clyde Stout spent Saturday in Burlington. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Neal and Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Neal attended services at the Baptist church in Carrboro Sunday night. Thomas. The Mt. Gilead Sunday school gave an ice cream supper at the home of ‘ Mr. Rufus Johnson on Saturday night. 1 ! Everybody seemed to enjoy it and the proceeds amounted to about thirty five dollars, which will go toward painting the new section of the | church. Mr. Walter Jordan and wife and Mrs. Viola Jones, Ada Brasington and ; Myrtle Ellis spent Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Mr. William Abernathy and son. , Ora, and Kyle Jones have returned from a trip to Morehead City. They report a good time. TWO SUCCESSFUL FARMERS. Mr. W. H. Cross, who is 81 years old and Mr. T. Y. Mims, 80 years old, are both old Confederate soldiers ■ and both are successful farmers. Mr. Cross is the uncle of Mr. Mims and both live in Cape Fear township. Mr. > Cross is without assistance on his farm, while Mr. Mims has a sixteen : year old son and his family only as a 1 help. Yet these men have as good crop as any farmer in Chatham and it is said that the fields are free from grass and the crops are all “laid by” in apple pie order. BUILD A HOME IN PITTSBORO. NEW STORE. Elkins,’ who paid worthy tribute to “mother Teague,” who by her life and example had giv en to the community a splendid fam ily of children, and a prayer by Col. J. Dan Dorsett, the guests enjoyed all the tempting dishes necessary for such an occasion, served on a table under neath the shade of stately trees. C. C. Teague, of High Point, spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Teague, attending the birthday dinner. The premium list for the Chatham County Fair, which will be held here October 7-10, are being distributed, and are unusually attractive, both as regards the prizes offered and their mechanical appearance.
