Thursday, February 16, 1928 FIND MEN LIVE LONGER WHEN WED PRINCETON, N. J.—That the chances of a college educated man’s surviving the stress and strain of the modern world are nearly twice as great if he marries than if he re mains single is the conclusion reach ed by examination of the record of the half-century class of Princeton University in its fiftieth anniversary year book, edited by Dr. Henry Fair field Osborn, president of the Amer ican Museum of Natural History of New York. Forty-two percent of the married men have survived the fiftieth an niversary of their graduation from Princeton, while only 25 per cent of the bachelors are living today. The average age of the class is 72 years, and fifty-eight, of the 152 men who j matriculated at Princeton with the class are still alive. Journalists and physicians have had the highest mor tality rate, while bankers, farmers, manufacturers and engineers had the lowest. In commenting o n the statistics, the year book says: l “Once married, the men of each profession not only live, on the average, twelve years longer than the bachelors, but 45 per cent of them still survive, as opposed to 25 per cent of the single men. Some credit for this record must be given to the good house keeping and cease less vigilance over rubbers and ovetf coats of the wives of ’77, and prob ably, if the truth be known, of theft daughters as well. “It is not surprising,” the book continues, “that the uncertain hours and high pressure work of the journalist and physician made both groups short lived. Perhaps the type of temperament essential to distinc tion in either of these lines burns up a man’s physique quickly. Calm ness and financial stability on the other hand survive long usage.” WHAT IS CANCER According to Prof. James Ewing, one of the best known authorities on the subject, cancer is character ized by ar. unrestrained and unres trainable local lump or sore which becomes larger and larger and in , many instances sends to other parts i of the body minute particles of its own tissues which starts cancer else where. Cancer is local at first, trifling in appearance and in many instanc es painless. goes wxog with the mechanism of the body and an unwholesome, persistent growth begins which growth when once be- ! gun cannot stop itself but must be destroyed or removed by scientific procedure. Cancer may occur anywhere on the outside or inside of the body. It is very smalF and trifling to begin with. When it occurs on the out side it is, of course, easily discover ed in its early stage and it is at this time that effective treatment brings about a cure. After particles of the cancer have found their way to other parts of the body and given rise to new growths the situation is much more serious. To cure cancer it is necessary to find out where it is and it is neces sary that it be removed either by surgical or other therapeutic means. The most maligant cancer was a simple and apparently harmless thing when it began; therefore, all suspicious growth should receive the careful attention at an early stage. ROTATE GARDEN CROPS FOR BEST YIELDS One of the best methods of secur ing freedom from plant diseases in the garden is to rotate the crops. “While we are pondering over the seed catalogue and planning our gar dens for this season, let’s give some attention to how the garden is to be planned and take steps to rotate the crops this year,” says Robert Sch midt, vegetable specialist at the N. C. state college. “When we speak of rotation of crops, we hardly ever think of the garden but of field crops like cotton and corn. Howev er rotation of vegetable crops is also of great importance although not for the same reason possibly as for the field crops. Since vegetables are usually highly fertilized, crop rota tion from the fertility standpoint is of little importance. Its chief im portance lies in the control of dis eases.” Mr. Schmidt explains that many vegetables belong to the same fam ily. These groups are attacked by the same diseases and insects. For instance, cabbage, collards, kale, radish, turnips, and mustard are closely related as are potatoes, to matoes, egg plant and pepper. In rotating crops, therefore, care must be taken to work on a family Bladder Weakness If Bladder Weakness, Getting up Nights, Backache, Burning or Itch ing sensation, leg or groin pains make you feel tired, old, pepless, and worn out why not make the Cystex 48 hour Test? W. W. Stedman Moncure, N. C. basis, states Mr. Schmidt. Tomato- . , es should not follow egg plant nor ' pepper, nor should turnips follow j cabbage, and so on through the list, j Most vegetable diseases are } car ; ried in the soil for three or four . years and if a rotation is to be of j value, it must extend through a four ! year period. If land is scarce and rotation is not disease control must then be accomplished by planting the resistant varieties.
