of the Supreme Cour'. declaring it illegal,
.will test tbe honesty of the people of the
State. From the disposition manifested by
the press, which is unanimous in favor of the
State immediately legalizing the debt, there
seems to be no ground for tbe apprehension

disgraceful category with Missis-ippi. The
debt now decKred illegal was funded in 1851.

The people of the cities of California, Bank
ers and others, who hold large quantities of

honored in some shape or other favored this
Legislative endorsement of the debt to en
hance tbe value of their claims, and seconded
