FRIDAY, JULY 2. 18C9. PUTY THE SUBBOWS 01 A P00B OLD MAK. The National Intelligencer, once one of the smartest papers of the day but re cently saddly degenerated has gone by the board. There is now no National Intelligencer. But it may be only sleep injr, which will be the sleep of death un less some benevolent gentlemen see fit to blow the breath of life into it in the form , of greenbacks. The hat is now being passed round in Washington, and if the people "come down" liberally it may yet get another lease of life, but otherwise it is doomed. "OH THAT MINE ENEMY WOULU Wxlilxi r-AJBOOK." Andrew Johnson, thegreat "Lam" is going to write a book. Wriat he is going to write about, he has not yet announced, but everybody knows that it will be about himself.. He never speaks or writes about anything else. "We expect soon to see the advertising agents coming out with notices in all the papers in the country. ? ADVICE TO EDITORS. The New York Sim advises all brother editors to use up their jokes as fast as they make them for fear they will get Htalc. For instance the Sun had a lot ready for Secretary Borie, and President Grant has saved him the trouble of using rr THE VJjaOINIA ELE0TI0H. jNext Tuesday will decide who is to be Governor; of Virginia, and an exciting election it will be. The canvas has al ready been spirited and both parties have taken- every precaution to make assur ance doubly sure, and both seem entirely confident of victory. OneHhing has been proved by the can vas that is worthy of especial notice, That is, sound, bare-faced democracy is at a discount. Nobody owns such a party, and no such party has a candidate in the field. 'Tho result, which ever way it termin ales, will oe in one sence a Republican ictory, for this reason The so-called ffulepcndem party, are nseing every means to secure Republican votes, and to' disown tie idea that theirs is the dem ocratic - party. Certainly democratic votes will never elect Walker Governor of Virginia, and if he is elected at all, which we doubt, it will be done by cater ing J for H'otes outside their party, and ffl'rejgn , to their real sympathies. The fight has been hot and long and the re s'ult will soon be told. l H WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT. ' A few years ago news from Europe no more than ten to fifteen days old wgs considered new. Now if people cannot get, the market reports from Europe the same day, and have them announced only a few hours after the announcements are made there, they call the news old and .:it is. . :,( . .. If our merchants cannot get the New ' York market reports within a very few hours after they are announced in the in the stock and other exchanges then they consider them behind the times, and t,hey are, f people cannot know to-morrow mpruing what transpired in the Capital of the nation to-day, they consider that the papers are not up to the age, and they are not. - Therefore the Times gives its readers every morning the European and New York market reports up to midnight the day previous, and the transact'ons in Washington up to within three hoars of going to press.' ! THE CAPACITY OP BEAHPOET HAEBOB Interested parties have recently: said much to lead those not acquainted! ivith the facts, to bcHeve'that there is not a sufficient depth pi water at Beaufort; to accommodate large sea going vessels. To enlighten the minds of such, we pub lish below three short letters which have been handed us by a friend whie.h will entirely contradict rnv sucb assertion. The signatures attached to the letters will be sufficient proof that the facts are exactly as stated. ; Beaufoiit, December 5, 1855. Mr. E. R. Stanly: . Sir : rda'hot thifik I fras ever so much disappointed as I was in the Harbour of Beau fort. In Chartering in England for this place I would not take the cargo unless the parties would guarantee 16J feet to come with; to my J surprise, on crossing the bar, I found 22 feet pi water, after a strong j J7ester-f ly wind (which has a tendency to blow the water out of the river.) The wind hauling N. Westward, tlie Pilot was compelled to beat the Brig up to the anchorage. "We are a large carrying vessel, and it is difficult to beat in all channels, -and had this -been narrow it could not have been accomplished. The har bour is very convenient, the channel deep and there is do difficulty in loading to 20 1 feet 19 certain. The vessel I have has on board 520 tons of llaihvay Iron, and her draft is 15 feet 3 inches. Had I supposed the depth of 20 feet or even 18 I should loaded to ,1C - feet 9 inches. ' " , 'v f--- ' "" My Vessel is now in the market, and if parties can be found to load her f from this port to Europe I will fill her full or ". load her to 17 feet and I know there will be no diffi culty in once more getting her on tlie Pond. It af fords me pleasure to be able to reply satis factorily to your, enquiries respecting Beau fort Harbor. My Charter Party guaranteed only 16 feet depth of water on' this bar, but in crossing I did not find less than 21 feet at two-thirds flood, and would not hesitate to cross at any time drawing 17 feet, . There is no objection to your barthe harbor is per fectly safe and' easy of ingress and egress, and if you do not succeed in building up a great Southern Sea-port town the fault can not be attributed to your beautiful Harbor.
