William IL Stanly and Martha Wright are the dramatis persons in this little farce of she stoops to conquer, now Stanly nvght have been better employed than getting drunk, and thereby rendering himself unable to follow Dr. Livingstone. The public is agitated upon this subject, they expect some account from Stanly, and they have it here, and we presume the next letter he writes for the Herald, he will be largely indebted to Herodotus Spi ke and Biley's narrative. His Honor administered a moral lecture which we hope will have its effect in Stanly's refoma tion. Martha Wright now it m'ght be infered that her name was an indication of her character, and that she was al ways right, but alas for the f ralties of human nature to which Martha is no exception, die was disorderly and her flights of fancy.' were such that she imagined herself to be Anna Dickenson in her famous lecture " what's to hinder," but there was a good deal to hinder, her extreme youthf nlness did not protect Martha as it did Anna, and so a policeman brought her before the court, on a charge of disorderly conduct for which she was fined $1.09 after depositing the lucre she smiled a smole and then left. We should never allow ourselves to forget that nature intended us for warm-blooded animals. . In this climate of surprising changes, we are very apt to forget it, especially in the j fall and spring. At such seasons, when we freeze and simmer on alternate days, there is engendered in us a certain recklessness, which takes no heed of cold or heat, dampness or dryness, and receives all temperatures with the same front, generally a defenceless one. It is certainly very troub'esome to change front as often as the weather, and there is a prejudice in American minds against such change, which has a great deal to do with the rapidly increas ing population of our graveyards. People like to have some stability of purpose, and if they can have it in nothing else they will try to have it in dress. They will not make a change until they make a permanent one for the season. No matter how hot it is in the spring, they will wear clothes until summer, and no m itter how cool it may be in August, summer clothes must be worn until fall shall actually set in. Thus of times suddenly and. with sad results we find ourselves approaching the condition of the fishes and lizards for the chill, that alert forerunner of disease, is ever ready, in our climate, to take advantage of cicumntances. We suppose that there are no people in the world so indifferent to the demands of the weather especially cool wea'her as Ameri cans, and one reason of this is that very many of us are ashamed to keep warm. To wrap up and button up, and to put down windows whenever there is a chilling change in the air, argues, to most minds, a namby-pamby eager ness to be well that is repugnant to the Ameri can souL So, rather than be laughed at, we prefer tradgey to comedy, the grave to the ri diculous Home and Society, in. The Jfetes relates an amusing incident which took place at the State Fair, wherein an entry was made of an Odoriferous Goat, and at the conclusion of the Fair was awarded a three dollar premium as being the best sheep. Pretty fair. A correspondent of the Asheville Citizen relates for truth the fol owing "supernatural " incident: ' Mr. Hamilton Millsaps, of Yellow Creek, Swain county, wickedly stacked some fodder on Sunday, very near two stacks he had made during the week. In throwing down his, last pile, the fodder took fire, from what cause he does not know, and was sood devoured by the flames. The fire caught the other stacks, piled in the week, but though dry, they did not burn. Who can explain this phenomenon?" The larcest vineyard in the Southern States is said to be near Fayetteville, N. C, contain ing 100 acres on which there are 7,000 vines, chiefly the Scuppernong. The above is from the Asheville Citizen, and we only copy it to remark, incidentally, as it were, that the Castle Hayne vineyard, about 9 miles from this city, now contains over 70,000 vines, 50,000 of which are bearing, besides 25,000 pear trees, and apples, peaches, &c almost ad infinitum.
