NewYobk, Nov. 6. The Eeruld't election
estimates gives to Grant 28 State , and to Gree
ley 8 States, or 268 Electoral votes for Grant to
"90 for Greeley. The popular majority for
Grant is placed at 350,000.
The Herald editoriuHv says that whether the
result will te accountel for by the pope
l.ir strength of Gtn. Grant on one hnno
or weaknei-a of Greeley, and feebleness of the
Liberal Republicans combined, with the Dem
cratie bolt on the other bund, it is in many re
spects tbe most remarkable Presidential elec
tion in the history of the country.
The Tribune gives Grant 232 Electoral ivoteB
at the low. st and 78 for Greeley, with the rest
doubtful. There is scarcely a ptrallel case, it
says, in the completeness of the route and tri
umph. It argues that the Liberals could not
withstand the enormous outlays of moneys ex
pended by the Republicans in conducting the
canvass.. Gen.. Grant now has four years
more per with heavy Concessional majori
ties, it toys in whatever reform he may sek to
tff.cthe will have the aid of tbe Tribune.
The World pi ices Grant's popular majority
at 300,000. It says that the defeat is due to
tjhe Democrats surrendering to Greeley and
that the demoralization consequent npon! New
York ring pecul itions of a year ci two ago had j
disheartened the parly and caused the nomina
tion at Baltimore, that the p rty had ndt re
covered in time from the T-unmany taint jto do
anything; till too late.
The Tintki gives Grant 300 Electoral j votes
ant Greeley only 43, with the balance doubtful
.... All tbe election Districts heard from on the
majority vote of this city give Hnvenaeyer, Re
publican, 51,959. Lawretce, Tammany, 48.00J,
O'Brien. Apolo Hall, 34 301, Havemeyer p'n
rulity being 3,454. The General Assembly in
the State wiH probably stand 44 Democrats to
84 Republicans. The Senate is Republican,
holding 'ver from last yeaT. ,
t The Tribune commenting on the result, "says

GENERAL NEWS.
FROM WASHINGTON.
Washington, Oct. 6. ;
Th 89 whn have conversed ' with President
i
Grant and his more intimate lrieuds in Wash
ington during the past month. ;wilt re rue nber
that tl ey uninformly predicted such a result of
the Presidential election as has j'isi cc3iirre.
They seemed to possess diti from gentlemen in
different p.irts of the country ; which juit'fied
them in their hopes and prospects, now fully
realized. ' The President to-day recurved calls
of congiital itions in addition to numerous tel
egrams of greeting, and also announcing re
sults. He expressed t'aanks to his gnetts for
these manifest itions of friendhip, and apart
from the political issues involv-Jd was gratified,
that the people had vindicated bis private
character, which had been assailed duriug tjl
c mv ts-s, that there will be at laast one change
iu the (Jubiuet at the commencement of th
next Presideniial term, ihere isn quebtioi.
It is known that Secretary -Fish has recently
expresselhis wish-s to bo relieved from the
position of Secretary of State. This desire
will be gratified at the end of the
present term. There is no proba
bility of a -change of Attorney Gdner .l
Judge Williams recently remarked that al
though he could have been elected Senator
from Oregon, Le declined te bg a candidate
in order thit he m'ght remain in his pr -sent
r ffice. There is good reason fr st,.t ug
that any remarks with regard to th? other mem
bers of the Cabinet would be mere speculation
but it may be s dd th vt the coram'ssions of all
of them will expire at the clo3e of the present
term, thns necessitating new commissions to
thone serving as Cabinet offi ers after the 4th of
March next. It is too early to anticipate the
Pr-sident's action in the future concerning
reforms and measures ot administration, turth r
thxn his intimation to-day that : h will so en
deavor to shape his official conduct as to nnite
the people in stronger bonds of peace, while by
all raeaus'in his power promoting their w.liare
