Looking about the world, aftar long years of tr'al, which necessarily have brought me some experience, lor a final home wherein to set my household altar for afield worthy an earnest man '8 endeavors I have found none that seem ed to me to so; much need relations with the rich trans-Atlantic centre of finance and trade as Eastern North Carolina. The chances for immediate results to me, seemed very slender : the country was poor, tho people disheartened, the future very far from promising ; and yet having woigbed all things well the people; the country r the natural advantages; the disadvan tages; the' water communicatioas;"the harbors; the bars; the railways; everything I came to the conclusion to cast my lot with this neglect ed part of our State with Eastern North" Caf olinaand to take her if she would me,' 'or better or for worse, until death doth! ns part." Having come to this determination, I sought to lay the basis for great work-involving years of future labourin the interest of our section andxif the entire State upon a firm, founda tion. . Many of our citizens have been vaguely informed of my efforts ; but I have hitberte been absolutely silerit-fof I am" not one of those who talk for the sake ' of talk, or waste ink on nonsense regarding matters of public interest I have been at work steadily, earn estly arid to the point - I will not weary the public with useless details, but. will come at once to the point. ? r I very early saw that all our future capital, jfor the development , of our interests, must come from London Our needs I could see plainly enough drat with a discredited State with men of influence openly preaching the soicidatpoircy trrepuIation:;::tnljo banks to facilitate negotiatlojiav &ad a; gweral finan cial demoralization pervading all -classes, it was hard to see the means to accomplish the end, or supply those needC " Jk.t0wever set myself to work to discover those means. Newton Beach,? and others, in London, who wield powerful influence in .the financial world, we think we are right in aaying that it means business. But there is one point connected with the 'J Midland .'Lschsnxe which, if carried out to the end, will open to it the doors of every capitalist in Europe, : Xt does not propose to build up its own greatness at the'expense of its State, or the tax-payers of that State. Jtdoes not propose to steal the properties of the State for the benefit of any private clique or ring, but it proposes to use its powers, its influence, and its charter, to help place old North Carolina back where she was before the ..war . We. be tray no confidence when we say that the. best influences which the 43&lLmd" has secured in London were touched with the earnest efforts which the representative of this Company made on behalf of his State. V It is known that the Council of Foreign Bondholders have been , for some time looking into North Carolina affairs, and whatever that Council ever recommends to be done, in regard to the pubhV securities of any Government or Corporation will bo done. We all kho w that Nforfli Carolina, cannot t pay her present exhorbitant and :mostly.nujost if knot illegal debt It is not to be expeetecL But if she is ever to see prosperity reyire among her people ; is ever to resume the high and hon orable position which ahe once held, site roust do something.' What is that something? When the question is sought to be solved, as it will be in the General Assembly this winter, we who write these Jines will not be, there. to counsel pt advise. But we hope that there will be one there whose name we refrain, at - his request from sri vine whose counsel will be taken. No o . man in the whole State, we believe, more thor oughly appreciates her position than, he,', and we have never known a man whose peculiar powers of mind, experience, and acquirements better fit him to attempt her ' extrication, i In wishing well to " The Midland North Carolina Railway Company" we are simply wishing well r.-s O-d North State, for their interests are i v.v iiaalical.
