Wadosboro, April 12, It sterns th '"-- t who wt-i'ii c.iptuini iu Litesviile iaii. I idjy, are wanted in other ftni'-s oesiues aouin Carolina, rjst'jffice Inspector J. W, Hu I-, .-f W-ssHntfton city, came in Aloaday night on the lloTdo k tiMin, to look into the case, lie j neatiiLed the men as Conn ; Shorty, alias John Kislier, and T?m Kobiuson, alias Caarles O'LUy, and s.ys they are the j suj; m. n who were operating in i Alexandria, Va., in 1903, It I appears that bhorly is an old i hand at the business, while Kjbinson is more inexperienced. Shorty, or Fisher; was removed from the Klondike Hotel aud loutred in a cell in jiil. He is siiil suffering from his wounds, tuouhmuch improved, Hobin- sun, alias Charles O'Day, is ruling quietly and the doctors t link there is some chance of his recovery. Mr. K, R, Riy, secretary and treasurer of the McAden Mills, ! at McAdenville, was in the city yesterday returning from Wadt s boro, accompanied by Pinkerton ! Detective Eugene Scheule, , After a thorough investigation, Mr. Ray and Mr, Scheule are j convienced that the man giving ! the nam 3 of Fisher is one of the! gang that blew the safe in the office of the McAden Mills a month or more ago. Fisher is said to have been a member of the gang that camped in the neighborhood ol astonia several aays prior to the robbery, and also to have been at Lowell the day before the robbery. Fisher and his companion, if the latter recovers, will first be placed on trial for the Health Springs robbery. Doctors Disagree. At'auta JU' Da!, Doctors re always disagreeing. A lot of Chicago health club peo pl have advanced th'j idea that a great deal of sickness comes because people are too clean; because they are not dirty ; enough, The idea that people ' j ought even to eat a little dirt, now and then, was advanced. Physicians, said the ladies and gentlemen of this particular health club, have talked about microbes so much that the human race is actually so afraid rf microbes that it keeps cleaner than it really should. Here's another theory jirred, It had come to be pretty well accepted that not only was clean liness next to godliness, but that it was a requisite of good health. When doctors disagree this way ; what are the plain people to be liove? We suppose plenty of proof could be found to prove cither aide of this proposition. That's always the trouble. There is always logic enough to make any side of any given proposition seem reasonable, and always incidents enough upon which to base the logic- It is the same way with coffee, and with tobacco. 'Physicians have never agreed about tobacco. Se me say that it is not only a bad hing for certain delicate organi zations, but bound to be bad for all. And if a man dies at the age of 113 after having used tobacco for 100 years they sigh and remark that if he had never touched the noxious weed be might have lived to be 120 years old. We are used to discussions concerning the benefit or detriment from using alcoholic beverages;but that the physicians should fall out about water is something new. Calls Two Professors. Hickory Mercury. The Trustees of Lenoir College held a meeting Tuesday, They had a busy day of it. Most of what vns done was of a private rharacter, pertiining alone to the management of the college. In addition, it' was necessary to call two professors to fill the place of Profs Sox and Rudisill who rKsignnd. Prof. V J. Stirewalt, c f NVwmarket, Va., was elected in Prof. Sox's place, aud Prof, Chas E, Boger, of Concord, N. C, was elected in Prof, Rudisill's nlacp. The new elected pro f sors com" highlv reomroend . d, and it is bel'evod the trustees tuc wisely in their selection. North Carolinians Make Money Fishing. It m k Hiil, s. C., Herald, Two North Carolina brothers mmd bernethy came into this count-.- last summer and'located ' ai the Jones Mill, formerly known ,as Garrison's Mill. At that point j tlvjre is an old dam that was well ! iu ruins, -The strangers however, re built the dam, put iu a half-dozen or more traps, aud nj.v they are daiiy reaping a fine reward, Tuey catch from 400 to bOOpounds of fish redhorsy, carp and suckers and sell them , on the Rock Hill ana Fort Mill markets at 10 cents per pound, Last Thursday they disposed of about 000 pounds, and each day since they have had iarare sup plies on this market. While our own people were asleep, these North Carolinians 'came into our midst and inaugurated an industry that nets them from $30 to $75 per day. That is a big thing, and only serves to show the many ways ye undeveloped by which money may be made, if we are smart enough to take hold. Breakfast Bacon. Sonthprn Frin Magazine. It is astonishing how much the farmers of the South miss by rot making their own breakfast bacon. It is so easily prepared 'and cured, is so excellent and I raltable as a food, and is relished for such a longtime without be- comintr deaDDetizmer. and is. withal, so wholesome that the wonder is that everv farmer does not make his own breakfast) bacon, There are numerous' receipts for doing this, and some brands of bacon put up by large slaughter houses have attained an international reputation. The (subjoined method is used by a j successful farmer and may be j tried without disappointment iu j the result, ! As soon as the animal heat is out of the meat select carcasses , of nudium weight and cut strips from each side of the abdomic"1 ; opening about seven or eight incr)es wide and as long as the Addling. Be careful to select those strips that show an alter. nation of lean and fat streaks, These are called "bellystrips" and are the same as the thin edges of the middling. Make a kettle of brine by boiling and have it strong enough to float an egg, For tvery 100 pounds of meat to be cured add 10 pounds of brown sugar to the brine. Put the strips of meat in a barrel and ar range them so that each piece may stand separate, if possible, Pour the brine in the barrel so as to cover the meat thoroughly. L(?t it remajn in -the brine for three or four weeks, then hang it in a tight house and smoke it with a wood fire for three or four days After this canvas it. Breakfast bacon may be made in the spring or fall, as well as in the winter mfcnthp. but it must be used quickly. f!HAMBERLUVS COUUH REMEDY TUE BEST AND MOST POPULAR. Agusta Chronicle. G. I. Wolfe had a narrow es- 1 k- cape yesieruay iroui ueiu seriously injured, and he is con gratulation himself on his escape. Mr, Wolfe was out near the old glass works when he heard a noise in the bushes just before him, and the next minute he was horrified to see a big moccasin spring at him and twine itself : about bis leg, Mr. Worfe kicked1 out vigorously and shook the snake loose, and then dealt it a crushing blow as the serpent returned to the battle. In describing the affair Mr. Wolfe said it was one of the largest highland moccasins he had ever seen, and that he could not account for his escape from being bitten. Union County Liquor Law Holds Good. Rjk-igh News and Observer, 12th. Of the cases handed down decided by the Supreme Court yesterday, only one, thj,t of State vs Barrett, from Union, was of any general Interest. The; point involved was the con struction ol a statute passed by the Legislature of 1903, for Union county, which declared that the possession of more than one quart of whiskey at one time should be prima facie evidence of an intent to sell. The defendant Barrett was arrested on the road, having at the time some five or six gallons of whiskey in his buggy, which was concealed by a lap robe. The evidence was simply as to this fact on the part of the State, the defendant offered no testimony and, following the charge of the judge, the jury returned a verdict of guilty. On appeal the Supreme Court affirmed the verdict and" judg ment of the court below and upheld the constitutionality of the statute in question, the opinion being written by Justice Connor and concurred in by Justice Walker :n a short opinion, Justice Brown, dissenting, argued that the statute was unconstitutional, as itaffected the fundamental rights guaranteed by the 14th amendment to the constitution of the United States and as abridging the right of all citizens to a presumption of innocence A DAREDEVIL RIDE often fiuls jn n, t-ad arcidpnt To heal acoidutal iijuri-H, use Huckleii's Arnica Salve, "'A deep wound ia my foot, from fn accident." writes TlieodoreSchtiele of Columbus, O., "canned Die great pain. The late Baron de Hirsch, the Jewish financier, was dining at a German nobleman's house in company with a certain rrince, who made no secret of his venom dus antipathy to the Jews. Courtesy proved no barrier to the outflow of his spleen, Remarking upon a tour he had made in Turkey, he said he had been favorably impressed with two of its customs; "All Jews and dogs that are caught are immediately killed." The Baron, with s milling sang froid, immediately relieved the scandalized consternation of the other guests with a bland re joinder: How fortunate you and I don't live there!" Suppose you wait here in this comfortable seat by the elevator while I match these two samples of ribbon," said Mrs May fair sweetly to her husband, who had been entrapped into go ing shopping with her.
