In anticipation of this event four buyers of the firm are now in New York City selecting mer chandise. A few days ago J. E. Spainhour, head of the chain of Spainhour stores, left for New York, together with Eugene Spainhour, of Elkin, Lincoln Spainhour, of North Wilkesboro, and Herbert Jeffries, from llieir Hickory store. Lincoln Spainhour and Mr. Jeffries are attending i the shoe convention and are I buying a stock of shoes. I J. E. and Eugene Spainhour I are buying other lines, such as a { complete new stock of piece I goods, ready-to-wear and kin- I dred lines. Announcement was made last ' night that the entire remaining I stock of the fire merchandise ! would be closed out completely ^ to the very last yard of cloth j and very last pair of shoes, j Nothing now on hand will be left in the store when it reopens for remodeling. During the last sev- I eral days of January their store I will be closed for re-modeling. 1 Plans have been made for I modernizing this into a much ' finer place than it was. even be fore the fire. More new and mod ern equipment, new arrangement of departments, aad many other changes will make their store here one of the outstanding in Western North Carolina. Mr. Spainhour states that "the great improvement in general conditions justifies larger and more complete stocks—and also justifies handling even higher grade, higher priced merchan dise as well as the other more popularly priced lines. But, those of our many customers who want the less expensive merchan dise v.-ill not he forgotten, for oiir big bargain basement is be ing stocked more completely than ever before. "The fire was a terrible thing and I hope we ^ will never exper ience another. However. while we are at it. we expect to fix this store up in such a manner that the good folks of Wilkes and neighboring imunties will point to it with pride—it will be more than just a store—it will be a regular institution. ■(’ati I touch you for five dol- lar- "For five ilollar.s you ran sock me on tlie jaw!" She pokes fun at her dixfifilofegcln spite of this Baby Jaifl^gg|iW^uch an im pression in Universal talkie role w#s signed to a long term^o^ffecU' This con tract covers tw#Ce'’'as many years as her present age. She won it for her work in "Imitation of Life” as the daughter of Claud ette Colbert, who is starred with Warren William in the screen version of Fannie Hurst’s novel which has just been booked for the New Orpheum theatre for a two-day run on Monday and Tuesday. During the filming of “Imita tion of Life’’ Baby Jane was treated just like a grown up. She had her own little canvas cha’ir on the set like her elders, with her name stencilled on the back. She had a "stand in,” a lit tle girl exactly her own age and height. This is not very old or very tall, for Jane is only three and stands but thirty-three inch es from top to toe. She weighs thirty-three pounds. Every day Jane brought her toys with her to the studio while she was acting in the Fannie Hurst film. She had an Aunt Jemima doll with a bandanna handkerchief on its head. Be fore she would go on the set to act she would sit this doll in her own canvas chair. On its lap she set a small China teacup with a brozen handle. This cup is one of her most treasured possessions. Now and then Jane would for get the next word in her lines and put in one of her own. Oc casionally they were improve ments because they were more like what a child would say. In such cases, the correction was allowed to stand on the sound track and director John M. Stahl would give Jane an ice cream cone. ECONOMY AUTO SUPPLY TO OPEN (Continued from page one) man for Chevrolet dealers, will he manager of the Economy -Au to Supply.
