Electrifying Farms In spite of the depression, con tinued progress has been made in rural electrification. For ex ample. the Alabama Power Com pany recently announced that it is spending $800,000 this year for the extension of rural llnes^ which already serve more than 38,000 rural customers. Except in rare instances the “horse and buggy” age passed from the farm with the advent of the low-priced automobile, but the "oil lamp’’ age still Ungers on. Electricity, however, is rapid ly changing that situation also. Electricity will restore the at tractiveness of the farm as a place to live, and may well re verse the farm-to-clty migration that has gone on since the turn of the century. The farm home has many natural advantages. It has the fresh and clean air, the uncrowd ed spaces, the fields and gar dens and orchards that sustain life and give health. Given now by electricity the common comforts of cities. In cluding lights, hot watef, wash ing machines and ironers, the country dweller may yet become the envy of urban cousins who so long have pitied his lot.
